Why even bother with getting someone's laptop back? I'm sure it is all related to information security, but couldn't they just remote lock and wipe the laptops of anyone leaving the company? Most of our computers are 3+ years old and probably worth less than what it costs to ship a box and ship it back. Just remote wipe and give it to the ex employee as a parting gift.

Is anybody else getting Equipment people emailing them about devices that crashed years ago (pre Charlie) and that never got returned and insisting that they be shipped back ASAP? I’m not saying this means a layoff in my future, but it is awfully strange.
Why would you want these junky laptops they give us?
They're slow, CPU fan is always screaming. They're not powerful enough to do anything heavy, so it's basically a glorified Chromebook.
If you're thinking you'd sell it, you'd get a hundred bucks, maybe less.
All returned equipment goes to a third party company. They are contracted to wipe it and certify that they did that. They, in turn, get to resell the asset and keep the profit. Age of the equipment is of no significance. I have shipped laptops that I had less than a year to them.
Basically, the risk is transferred to that company and WF is in the clear.
As of the first of this year, any new laptops/desktops shipped to EU's are leased, WF no longer owns the equipment. Your computer crashes, your devices life cycle is up, you get a leased computer.
Wells used to let employees buy end of lifecycle equipment at a significant discount. Then they got reports of laptops on eBay being bought with customer data on them.
After that LAN could wipe and donate them, but then some new law made that a liability.
This is why they won't remote wipe and let you keep it. Besides, why would you want one of these garbage Dells? The Lenovo's we used to use were much better.
Just toss it on the concrete in the concrete in front of where you live. And then tell them to Please clean that "sh@t up and leave" "your in front of my house"
When I was laid off, I was very conscientious about returning my stuff to the very kind admin who was helping me. On my last day, I organized it all on my desk to hand it off. She asked if I'd wiped my cell phone. I turned very slowly and gave her a look like, "What do you think?" She just nodded knowingly and said, "Yeah OK Wells will take care of that". I could have done it but seriously... just how easy did Wells expect me to make it for THEM? Expecting effort beyond what was required to get my package was never gonna happen. It was a tiny little moment of protest but it was MINE.
My last two companies let you keep the laptops (after remote wipe to elim UK Nate risk– they were in finserv companies, too). Same with my friends and relatives.
WF doesn't donate them and just destroys them. Stupid is as stupid does.
That has Reg W implications, so that wouldn’t happen.
