The layer of managers below SVP is being completely eliminated due to spans and layers.

I don't buy that for a minute. I seriously doubt they're going to get rid of the entire VP level. In tech that would be a large number of Tech managers that manage development teams. Basically SVP is 2 downs from Saul (CIO and the like). 3 downs might be SVP in some cases or VP in many cases. Those used to be like tech area managers or something like that (lord knows we had a million titles at that level). 4 downs would be sr. tech managers (and most of those are VP) – even those folks have tech managers that could be VP or AVP.
Do we need fewer layers and better spans of control? Yeah, but they're not getting rid of an entire layer of people.
We're all AVPs in my area of IT, and we're all just doing normal IT stuff.
We're all Individual Contributors.
I'm sure someone somewhere is using it, but I don't know of anyone using the AVP title anywhere other than on the HR paperwork.

Tons of AVPs are individual contributors. OP is full of carp.
I seriously doubt. The mechanics of the process has been described in other posts here. The EVPs and SVPs are the ones making the choices of org design and layoffs. If you were given that responsibility would you get rid of yourself and all your peers?
You guys realize there’s a lot of individual contributor svp’s, right? The title doesn’t mean you’re a manager
Please eliminate these in auto. There are SVPs with practical harems. Have a look at the org chart.
This convoluted BS assumes only one layer of SVPs - hate to break it to Trolls R Us SVP is where there are the biggest glut of expensive managers of managers. The VP area is traditionally the lowest level and more of a working manager.
I'm not saying the poster is correct, but our org did displace several SVP managers two years ago. It's possible that they already trimmed the fat at that level (for now) and this time will be the AVP managers. It hasn't been a secret, middle level managers are a huge target in the first round.
Unlike many people posting, I will be the first to say that I don't know. It's just something that could possibly make sense based on what they have talked about and done recently.
Wouldn’t surprise me. The top taking care of the top. Get rid of the layer under SVP who interacts with managers and actually knows little bit about the job and it’s functions
