Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Hey WFC employees - upvote if you have interest in unionizing?

There will be an alternate site with confirmations to register.

For now, please no personal info.

This is just a gauge to see what interest there is to start a different conversation with management.

We need to remind shareholders and managment we got skin in the game too.

Thanks everyone!

There is no federal law that prohibits financial sector employees from unionizing. In fact, the National Labor Relations Act protects employees who seek to unionize and collectively bargain with their employer. The Act applies to Wells Fargo and you'll see statements and procedures littered throughout the Handbook and other personnel policies designed to ensure compliance.

All that said, unionizing has become more and more difficult over the years. The federal government's position has become much less friendly to unions and much more pro-business. I remember reading stories about the Committee for Better Banks and Wells Fargo at one point, but not much recently.

Unionizing is not an all or nothing proposition. Different employee groups with different functions can unionizing while others do not. The NLRA outlines all of that stuff, and a lot of information about the process can be found on the National Labor Relations Board's website: https://www.nlrb.gov/

@1dro: I hear ya. Well put as far as picking your poison. I would imagine most who are against it are making decent salaries. I do as well.

I was thinking more about our tellers and bankers who can barely eek out a living and are most vulnerable to the whims, abuses, pressures and retaliation from their managers. There are pros and cons to both sides. But if I were them, I would try to find a way to organize. I have a family member who is union. His company: blue collar workers are union, white collar are not. They all work together in harmony. I’m not necessarily pro or con that set-up but am just trying to throw some ideas around to encourage people to stand up for themselves.

Just trying to keep an open mind: why do some here jump on a post that you don’t agree with and automatically brand the OP a troll? Maybe the Negators are the trolls.

There are pros and cons to attempting to form a union, but most importantly I don’t understand the negative reaction to someone who has a suggestion related to empowering employees. Maybe instead of shutting him or her down right away, it could start a conversation that leads to something helpful.

@utn: you are probably right, but I couldn’t find anything backing your statement that Federal banks can’t unionize. Could you post something to clarify this?

@1yzj: Employees are shareholders as well. I’m not the OP, and I don’t think I’m necessarily pro-union.

Respectfully, I would like to present the other side: if there had been someone advocating for employees from 2011 to 2016, Wells Fargo would not have gotten away with the cross-selling scheme which continues to plague the financial health and the price of our stock today. Employees complained to HR, their only outlet, and were then ignored or fired, allowing the fraud to continue for 5 long years.

Our shares, and yours, could have been worth twice the value they are today.

What if everyone just stopped working for a day or two?

I DO think we could/should push for a trusted group of employees who have access and can provide insight and feedback to senior management and the Board of Directors. The idea has been proposed in the past in vain, but this is a whole new management team and maybe they could be swayed if it is professionally presented as a benefit to all parties and could improve management and employee relations after layoffs. It’s all in the sales pitch. And the intention. I think it may have even been put to a vote at a Shareholder meeting in a prior year. (It didn’t pass but we would need a strong team encouraging employees to vote their shares, reach out to large shareholders like the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia- they would LOVE us!) Hopefully, if properly presented, it wouldn’t have to get to that. The request has, in the past, come from The Committee for Better Banks. I don’t know if they are good or bad. Seems like Wells has always held them at arm’s length, I’m sure because they are union-backed. I’ve always had this idea in the back of my head that employees need someone strong and respected by all to speak for us, represent us. Right now we have NO ONE to advocate for employees. Certainly not HR. Having said this, I haven’t given it any thought as to how to get it started.

Let me know if anyone likes the idea. I haven’t thought this through- just typed the words like they flowed through my head. Please try not to be too harsh if you disagree.-I’m sensitive 😉.

As a shareholder myself. Paying attention to you folks. You would be the first to go. No shareholder in their right mind would want wf unionized. Sorry
Sounds harsh I know but....

Federal Banking law, you are not permitted to unionize, but nice try! You actually believe the government would allow a union to hold the banking system hostage to your ridiculous demands? Thanks for the laughs....Charlie

You're not going to get a good idea of the answer by asking a question about unionizing on a layoff website.

This feels like the Russian bot that asked about a general strike a week ago.

I'm all for unions, but this isn't the place, I'm calling t-roll alert.
