Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike does NOT pay better

Since I left Nike over 17 years ago on my own terms, I have been around the block in and aboUt the area.

For this who wish to stay for money only, keep in mind that Nike generally pays below market value. They rely on the “we’re Nike” cache and based on many comments they are right.

Speaking as an L band, Nike actually lowballed me during their first offer, it was laughable. The next day (probably because I couldn't hold my laughter during the first call), they increased the offer but not by much. Ultimately I took the offer because of commute issues I was having and Nike was the closest to where I was staying.

It really depends. Depends on whether or not you got competing offer, your education, related experience etc. I moved from Bay area, and at least Nike matched my compensation (slightly higher considering stocks). Probably I'll get a bigger offer staying in Bay area, but life is not all about salary, here in Portland the house is in much better condition with much cheaper price, close to nature, never too crowded, wlb etc.

Whether Nike pays better or not compared to other employers is entirely a function of your band and job title/role. I’m a U-band employee and I’ll be the first to admit that if I left Nike for a similar role in Portland then - all in - I’d be looking at a 15%-40% pay cut.

For my particular skill set no one else in Portland pays even close to what Nike pays. So I think it’s incorrect to assume that Nike pay rates are comparatively low for everyone.

Your mileage may vary.

Why do people who left the company years ago keep coming back here to post? Figure out how to get some closure for yourself and move on.

yeah E band is a sweet spot at Nike - lots of E banders would not be able to make more money outside of Nike...but almost all U banders can.

AND Nike does not adjust pay per location, despite what is stated, it isn't better pay for more expensive places to live e.g. the 10 Key Cities: Everyone is getting Portland pay. Just look at the talent acquired ........

Echo OP. Left as a U band and am making twice what I was, PSP and benefits included. Depends on your function, but don’t let money keep you at Nike If you’re unhappy. Slash, if you’re scared, start looking now! Can’t hurt. And always ask for more :-)

While @bjy raises a decent point about Portland-based employers, the reality is that there are lots of companies from other markets (e.g., Bay Area, Seattle) with growing Portland presences that offer superior total compensation.

It is true that FTE U-band software engineers at Nike can generally secure competitive base salary + 15% bonus target. If they join Amazon, Apple, Google, or a host of others, however, they can obtain the above, as well as a sizable equity component. In fact, many of these compensation packages exceed director-level E-band compensation at Nike.

Nike's compensation practices are not consistent with its stated goal of hiring world-class digital talent.

It depends on the employee's band. Personally, I have not found a single employer in PDX area to match my Nike base-salary. A couple of employers came close enough; however, if you factor 20% PSP and stock options, then no employer in the comes close. Try not judge but even if you do, the $ is the only thing that has kept me at Nike. After all, my family's security is the most important thing to me. Pay close attention to what I said, "the $ is the only thing that has kept me at Nike." I did not say that this WILL keep me at Nike. I have come to realize that I do not have to have all that $ when I can be happier, stressed-less, healthier and more HUMAN elsewhere. I am working on it.
