After the VSP in 2019, I opted to take some time off for the buyout period with the intention of eventually going back to work. The potential employers I was counting on and a couple I was in talks with have pretty much shut down hiring due to Covid. Some are even laying off instead. A friend asked me "Why don't you just draw unemployment for awhile?" I had never even considered this. Although my buyout period has ended, if we took the VSP offer, isn't that the same as "quitting"? Contemplating whether I should explore that possibility in NC but thought I'd check to see if anyone had first hand experience.

Boy half of the post have been deleted. What dryly they delete post. Like every place else you go for information they let you know what they want you to know.
I took VSP. My plan A was to find a new job which thankfully happened. My plan B was to file for unemployment. In my state if you voluntary leave a job you are not eligible for unemployment. My retort was going to be that while I opted for VSP, Verizon had the right to refuse my election. Thus constructively Verizon ultimately was in control and decided to "lay me offi." IANAL, but I have family member who are and they advised me that I might have a case and that potentially if it went to litigation either my states employment agency or Verizon might settle to avoid litigation (e.g. discovery, other charges of age discrimination, etc) Thankfully it didn't come to that since I found another job (much, much better btw). I wold file for unemployment in your state as others have advised, if they deny it and you have the funds then speak to a lawyer. I do believe the best path to follow is to find another job and put VZ behind you . Personally I'd rather invest in career counseling than lawyers and just move on.
The only way to know is to apply
Just apply, instead of getting feedback from all over. The worst they can say is No and then you'll have a definitive answer.
Management stooges can't manage money! HA!!!!
Why do you need unemployment if VZ paid you over 160k to quit?
If you had the tenure where the VSP was worth it to you, you shouldn't need unemployment.
It’s a shame Union Pig that you have no compassion for someone that made a decision that you apparently didn’t agree with. This shows you are the PIG in this conversation. I too took the VSP as did another 11,000+ people who believe it was the best decision for themselves, family and careers. Nearly all the VSP’ers I know and others know say they are better off. And for all the people I know that took the VSP, they made second thoughts on what they did but the one word I’ve yet to hear is REGRET.
NC unemployment – keep the faith and you’ll be fine. Check to see if you can get unemployment, no harm to ask.
Awwww poor baby can't get a job? Serves you right. You shoulda joined the union. Pig
Some states allow unemployment even with the VSP. However, I don't know if there is a date by which you need to file post termination. Never hurts to try. Call your state's unemployment office and ask.
