Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Just offered an HCM solution engineer position... but it's hourly?

Hey everyone. I was just offered a position as an HCM Solution Engineer in Austin, TX for Oracle. The recruiter was super sketchy through the whole process and I didn't find out that it was an hourly position until my final interview. It seems like they've been trying to hide this info. This is very strange because the position pays 90k plus bonuses, so I'm confused as to why a high paying position is hourly. The director told me that they do this to compensate for when solution engineers travel and work overtime, but I know no company is going to do something to only benefit the employee.

My questions are as follows...

Is Oracle known for cutting people's hours below 40 hours? I feel like they could do that after I accept the job and totally screw me over.

For anyone that works as an HCM solution engineer, are these roles typically hourly, or is this a new thing?

How strictly does Oracle track how many hours you work?

Is Oracle stingy on working overtime, will I be reprimanded for working overtime?

Any information on any of this in general would be super helpful!

That's how they f– you. "Sure we will pay market rate - it'll be in overtime you'll get x hours guaranteed every week" That way we can't get sued if we work you to death and if SC needs a bigger bonus we will just turn around and say...did we say x hours? There's been a change in management and that's no longer applicable. So....no more OT for you. So make sure your BASE salary is high and plan on not getting OT. Also in general they never give raises here. happy days and goodluck!

this was due to a class action lawsuit that support did since most support were working over the weekend without any compensation. i know before SEs take turns to man weekend support.

You will never be paid less than your base. There is the opportunity for overtime but that is highly dependent on your manager and above them. Find out directly from the the hiring manager if overtime is being approved, if working overtime requires pre approval and what the policy is for overtime that you needed to work but could not reach anyone to get approval for. Find out how overtime applies to travel if travel is part of the job. If you are traveling after hours or weekends, is that overtime (answer should be yes). You are legally required to record ALL time worked in your timeshare whether you had approval for the overtime or not. If anyone ever tells you to not record time worked, they are breaking laws and corp policy. If you are working overtime that is not approved and your area requires approval, don't. If you are being told to work overtime and not record it, don't work it or work it and record it and then file an ethics complaint, a complaint with payroll, and a complaint with the labor department and probably contact a lawyer. I don't know about your specific area but overtime was often a replacement for bonuses. Find out for sure. For my area, overtime was better for engineers because bonuses were rarely paid, were small when they were and not everyone got them.

It's typical for customer-facing technical folks like SEs and CSMs at Oracle. You get time and a half for any hours over 40 including travel (well that was a couple of years back) and boy did folks take advantage of that. You were technically supposed to get managers' permission but my timecards were always approved. When I left about 1.5 years ago they had really clamped down on overtime so no doubt they are even stricter now. I wouldn't worry about that but I would be crystal clear on how your bonus will be calculated and paid and how long that plan was in place. I was under a new plan structure almost every year there.

How safe would you say it is to accept a job with Oracle currently as a mid-level SE? Do most layoffs come at the senior management level or are they all across the board?

Im an SE, you have to log 40 hours every week. Cant log less. This is due to some legal issues from a while back where SE where salaries and not getting paid for travel and overtime. Currently due to cost cutting no one can work OT. Generally you have to request to work OT and your manager will approve it. The SE orgs typically dont work OT. Good luck sir

Since January 2020, Oracle has had no budget for overtime, and really pushes folks to stick to 40 hours. You have to get approval upfront to work overtime. Bonuses, are at all time lows. So, figure out if your base salary is enough. I have too many folks accept a job at Oracle thinking they were going to make more money than their previous position. They then leave within 1-2 years. If you have no Solution Engineering experience, Oracle is a good place to learn. You can leverage those skills to land a higher paying SE position elsewhere. Hourly / overtime is not common for Solution Engineers in the industry.

Your starting hourly rate will be very important. Raises are almost impossible.

I can answer the following questions :

As far as I'm concerned, no more over time is offered, the company is overhauling the whole system, and deep cuts, in all directions have been made due to revenue decline of 6% during the last quarterly reports which were published on June 15 , 2020.

Indeed, this is new thing, it was never hourly based.

How strictly does Oracle track how many hours you work?
Oracle is not strict in terms of tracking hours worked, yet the pandemic driven recession has changed and will continue to change Oracle's policies to make the company financially fit or appealing to investors in the face of decline in demand.
