Had a call to a wireless telecom's support in India. No empowerment to do anything except answer the phone and read from a script. Spent almost 90 minutes arguing with them, for them to respond with irrelevant corporate speak. I hung up and contacted the FCC and filed a formal complaint. Within 24 hours, a rep from some exec's office called and cleared the matter up in less that 10 minutes. This is going to hurt WF in the long run.
Haven’t seen India technology offshoring work out in 3 banks and counting. IBM is still struggling to make it work after 20 years of trying, so I have to wonder how a bank thinks that they can make it work.
I am not a fan of offshoring, besides they don't factor in that these India resources jump jobs like it's going out of style, lack of continuity and quality.
Like my dad used to say, you pay peanuts then you get monkey.
It's cheap to Wells Fargo because (A) Requires low less critical thinking skills and business domain, (B) It's easy to automate or busy work, and/or (C) Low value to bank so they can skimp in quality
Only three of those jobs have the job title of my job. The vast majority are Software Engineers.
Guess that means I'll be somewhat safe.
I've been in corporate IT since the 90's, at Wells for the last 10 years or so.
Offshoring has been going on my whole career. It's no different than hiring contractors, which few if any seem to care about, other than the offshore folks are not white.
If you don't like it, vote better, get the tax laws changed, go after Wall Street's money and they'll stop sending your jobs to other countries.
Or just visit websites and whine.
Brutal. Sorry to hear–i feel for my USA colleagues being sold down the river for cheaper labor. I'm with WFA (client facing) and support has gotten worse and worse. I have to call or get transferred several times before I get a real, reliable answer. I suspect outsourcing 500 jobs to India is solely for budget purposes and not for quality or talent improvement.
It’s a race to the bottom by hiring all these checklist followers who can’t think for themselves
I wouldnt get an Indian work visa; keep in mind that maybe its a sign of the company going downhill to hire non skilled workers like mentioned in another post in this thread. This will be the beginning of the end for them if they go this route in mass. Maybe they just need to hire qualifed workers in US and less of them. Get rid of all the unskilled workers, waste of money. Some things in a business is not work saving money on, but other areas are a better option.
Maybe the real issue is in the leadership
I have a friend at a tech company who has some offshore Indian SWEs. His take was this: you aren’t going to get comparable quality engineers in India Because all the smartest engineers in India have already left on sponsored visas. If you want the best talent you need to pay.
Before you know it, they will outsource the entire department to an external company in India to run it. First you train the workers in India with the help from people in USA that will eventually get Rif'd and then they will outsource the entire department in India to another company like HCL or infosys or wipro.
Interesting, they dont require teller experience for engineering manager jobs
For what it is worth there is quite a bit of turnover on India, so would be curious how many of those are net new Also, for what it's worth there are current 643 open positions in US, but if memory serves it was a couple thousand not that long ago.
If I was a full time emp. in Tech at WF honestly I would be really nervous. You need to have a plan b everyone. Plus you can really find some better situations and pay out there, trust me. For the OP I would recommend nothing more than casually tossing out something when around them like “wow, lots of openings in India right now-must be having a growth spurt” and if they are paying attention they will go look and decide for themselves. Plus it could be that they aren’t replacing you (yet), they could just be augmenting your team with offshore resources (maybe laying off the contractors in the US). Hard to tell but good on you for keeping your eyes open.
SVB had a WFIP all-hands last week and talked about how India offices were going to grow like crazy. He said there were "only" 500+ openings in technology being filled now, so that means at least some of these job postings having multiple positions in them. He also said something like 3,000+ more coming soon.
Well, its time to get an indian work visa i guess.
Half of my group is in those openings. What would you do? Tell the people affected about the listings? Try to find another job (even though my job is not listed - yet)?
