I had my third 1:1 of the year with my manager today. He grilled me on where I was with certain items which I easily answered. From there, he proceeded to reprimand me for not responding to someone’s email in a timely manner. I was also chastised for completing my last compliance training course 1 day before the deadline.
He concluded my 1:1 by telling me I don’t act with a sense of urgency, I’m disengaged and seem distracted. He asked me if I was disengaged and distracted. I paused before replying, then told him I would need to get back to him with my answer.
To put things in perspective:
- My first 1:1 was in June, second was in August and third was today.
- I had my mid-year review in July (which is not a 1:1) that was less than glowing. Since year-end reviews are due in October, that gave me 3 months to “fix” what he says is wrong. (IMPOSSIBLE!) I had never been coached or received negative feedback from him until then.
- After my mid-year, I reviewed his comments on CP&D. For each objective, he 1) cut and pasted my comments from my self-assessment; 2) re-worded my comments; and 3) turned my positives into negatives by saying “However”.
- Clearly, I’m on the chopping block and my days are numbered. I acknowledge it and have come to terms with it.
We’re supposed to have a follow-up on Friday. I will respond one of two ways. I will either lay it all out or I will tell him I’m not comfortable answering whether or not I’m disengaged because I’m fearful my words will be used against me. I’ll give him specific examples from his plagiarism found in my review.
Am I disengaged? Of course! However, I don’t want to get terminated. So, how do I answer his questions?
