What is it you are seeing that gives you the faith this is going to be the time and Charlie Scharf is going to be the CEO that turns this declining behemoth around? Would you have the same faith in any outside bank executive they brought in? If not, what is it about Charlie? Will you feel so positive about his leadership if you are in the 25% who lose your job?
I know I sound negative. I’m sorry. I did pick myself up and brush myself off after Wachovia bought the company I worked for, days after my CEO promised he would never sell the company. And then I kept my chin up when Wachovia was collapsing under the weight of their Pick-a-Pay loans and they brought in Bob Steel to replace Ken Thompson. And then I rallied again when, 4 months later, there was a run on Wachovia Bank and Citigroup, no.. Wells Fargo bought us for pennies on the dollar. I lost 90% of the value of my company stock, but oh well: gotta keep on keeping on! And then I regrouped after John Stumpf blamed his management failures on 5000 employees, fired Whistleblowers, and continued heaping praise on Carrie Tolstedt. But I picked myself back up and brushed myself off when Tim Sloan came in making big promises. He did give me 50 shares of stock and sent out employee satisfaction surveys. Various assorted scandals ensued but I kept giving it my all. And then I tried to stay positive when Sloan stepped down after spending $40.6 Billion on stock buybacks at all-time highs claiming Wells had an “excess of capital”. And then I was comforted when they temporarily brought in Allen Parker, an attorney, and he had such a nice face. Maybe he could stay? And I tried to not worry when our Chairwoman Betsy Duke resigned rather than be questioned by the House Financial Services Committee. I work for WFA, so in the midst of all the aforementioned events I kept giving 100% through all the (I’m sure) good intentions of our assortment of leaders: Danny Ludeman, Mary Mack, David Kowatch, and now Jim Hays.
Anyway! Now we have been turned over once again to Charlie Scharf, who’s only known strategy is cutting 25% of employees. I think I could cut 25% of employees for a mere half of the $36 Million he’s being paid. Oh no, wait, I have a conscience, scratch that. But seriously, if I screw it up, I can just step down too.
