I’m wondering if there’s any merit to this strategy. If a manager somehow managed to get approval to post for an open role, I would suspect that the new role is important enough NOT to be obliterated a month or two later. What do you think?

Chances are low to get laid off in a new role at the bank, especially during a hiring freeze at Wells Fargo, you need a compelling reason to hire when bank is cost cutting.
That being said we are in the middle of a pandemic, with a bloated headcount and tons of unknowns...so you are naive thinking you are safe anywhere in this bank. I mean ANYWHERE not in Charlie's inner circle, you are at risk.
About 4 years or so ago I applied for a job, still within Wells Fargo, and someone I know who also applied got it instead. That person was laid off 6 months later.
If you are applying, I’d do it outside of wells. Very few know how many/ where layoffs will hit - especially 6-9 months down the road
My logic too @alc I have been applying internally and externally. Had an interview today for one. I am looking to get out of my current role due to Long time unhappiness. I will admit how uneasy I am with how slow it has been. I am definitely nervous about staying with wells as nothing seems like it’s safe and would prefer to leave altogether.
I can admit that I was laid off at Wells Fargo, not another company, only a few months after accepting that new position. Someone was hired ONE MONTH before the layoff notice too. Management even knew at the time of that posting the layoff was coming but let the hiring process continue so no one would suspect. I agree to what someone said earlier, nothing is guaranteed.
I would apply for the job if you really want the job and think it's a great fit for you. Don't do it just because you think you'll be safer. For all you know the person who posted the job will be gone next month.
I was approved for some in-depth training but I doubt that the managers approval for funding of the courses means I am safe from being cut next month.
That doesn't mean anything. They can still be laid off. I worked at another bank and someone just started about a month or so into the role and was laid off.
Some of the disgusting coworkers oddly thought it was hysterical.
You'd think, right? It seems logical to assume that a job wouldn't be posted at this point unless it was really important, but... many things don't make sense these days. It does seem logical that the role is not on any "list" for imminent layoff, but as other posters have said... there's no guarantee of what could happen a few months from now.
@jwo - I’ve seen people laid off two WEEKS into a new role at another company. That was during the height of the recession.

At another company I have seen people laid off 2 months into their tenure.
