I have 2 friends that have gotten away from Wells Fargo in the past 2 weeks. One younger, one 50ish. Both took jobs in their field. One is a Mortgage Underwriter, who went to a Credit Union. And the other is in the Accounts Receivable area, she went in to a management position at another large company. Both said these new jobs will be much less stressful, comparable pay and benefits etc. They feel like the weight of the world has been lifted from their shoulders.
It is a personal choice whether you want to wait it out or not. There are pros and cons to both choices and I could argue or support all viewpoints. Depends on many different factors: your age, your length of service, your skill set, whether you like your job, the pandemic, etc. Believe me- I’ve thought it through at every angle. Part of me is self-destructively rebellious, and does not want to leave without a package because that’s what Wells wants me to do. The other part of me knows that working here is going to be a rough ride for a long time, no matter what. I like my job, my boss, my paycheck, but I absorb the toxicity around me. I really wish I didn’t.
The reason for my post is to say that you can do both. You can keep this job while you are looking for something better. Don’t let Charlie Scharf have one bit of say over your future. People ARE getting other jobs at better run companies. Our leadership, past and present, has mucked this place up. No- not every other company is going to be the same. Some are, but many are not. Don’t let this place take you down.
Staying here and hoping for the best might seem easier, I get it. There are real risks to changing jobs right now, but there are real risks to staying here as well. There is a 1 in 4 chance you will lose your job. And even if you get to stay, will it be the company you want to work for? Only you can answer that question for yourself. I think we should consider coming up with a different plan. We shouldn’t be waiting on someone else to decide our fate. Acknowledge your own worth, clarify what is best for you and explore what else is out there.
