Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

New Health Insurance Plan and Life Insurance after layoff?

What are the best options for new Health Insurance coverage and Life Insurance coverage after being laid off from Wells Fargo? Assuming you do not have a new company, with benefits, to work for yet?
If you are being laid off use your current PTO from Wells Fargo to go to the Doctor, Dentist and Eye Doctor now prior to being laid off. When you start a job at a new company you usually cannot take any PTO, often "accumulated", for quite a while. When I got laid off at a former banking company I got a new job before my severance pay ran out. However at the new company, a huge, highly profitable company in the health care industry, they did not allow new employees to take any PTO for 6 months.
Terrible situation to be placed in. Had 2 young children and no PTO for 6 months.

Yes I have and it is all based on your income and what's available in your state. Just like employer based insurance DA.

Have any of you id–ts ever had ACA insurance? I did for 3 months due to a layoff. It had a huge deductible and the providers that accepted it were few and far between. This was in north New Jersey.

You should have had non work related term life already. Extra work life is ridiculously expensive.

Ask your doctor for the "cash" or uninsured rate. My doctors give 40 - 60% discount for uninsured (cash only) patients.

@gfk is probably a troll or drunk bc everyone knows OC is a marketplace for normal insurance companies. Instead of giving wells a discount for bringing in 260k employees they give the discount to all Xmillion participants. The entire point of pooling together and using it so you dont have to be in this situation where you depend on a POS employer for cheaper insurance just to get laid off with no coverage or super expensive cobra. It’s a no-brainer. Slap O’s name on it and demonize it so R winged republicans can justify hating on it. Im a mod rep and wont buy into this. Ive seen it work for a lot of extended family members.

@gfk+16JdJmBv Are you saying BCBS and United aren't real insurance companies? That's what OC is DA!

WF healthcare benefits in Norcal are abysmal. Every provider (medical, dental, vision) tells me and my family that WF coverage level is the Yugo or Pinto of healthcare. I used to have fantastic "Cadillac" benefits with other firms.

And I think benefits are about to get much worse (cuts).

If you're a veteran, the VA provides full health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act. It stays with you even if you find new employment.

This is a very personal decision but there are options out there. There's Obamacare (yes, its a viable option depending on where you live) and also brokers to help you navigate choices, if you prefer, based on your needs. A lot depends on whether you have a family, or just need coverage as an individual. I did COBRA until it ran out, because cost was comparable to (if not less than) private insurance, and WF insurance is actually quite good. I'm now contracting, largely because agencies offer healthcare. It's not quite as good as Wells for the cost, but for my situation it's still better than going private. I've learned a lot since being laid off from Wells. One thing I now know for sure... HSAs are a very good thing. Having that tax-free reserve built up can definitely come in handy if you wind up in a very high-deductible plan.

A few years ago we had to purchase health insurance via healthcare.gov for our family of four when I was in transition between jobs and the benefits at the new company did not start until after 30 days. It worked just fine for us. Don’t let other people’s statements influence your opinion about the healthcare.gov exchange. Do your own independent research. Most folks who say c-ap about Obamacare never had to use it and are making it a political issue instead of formulating their opinions based on facts and real experience. PS: I am a registered Republican.

Depends on how much you make, but the Exchange used to have great coverage. www.healthecare.gov. of course, if you can afford Cobra, that's usually better.

Go to healthcare.gov to find an affordable plan in your zip code.

https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/affordable-care-act/

When I was let go after 2 years of approved Medical Leave and Total/Permanent Disability, this site helped my bridge the health care gap of 6 months until I was approved for SSDI and Medicare. The rates are affordable and there are many options to chose from.

For 2 years while on Medical Leave and recovering from a stroke, I had to pay directly to WF HR for my monthly Medical/Dental/Vision. Once my 2 years were up they sent me a package for COBRA. It was too expense. Close to $1200.00 a month.

If you have young children or minors, work with your State or County Department of Social Services to get reduced or free Medicaid for your children. You also might qualify based on your circumstances.
