QA Position from IT to be eliminated?

Has anyone heard anything about QA position to be eliminated from IT? I heard from a multiple sources that this will happen soon. Just wanted to know if anyone else has any 311 on this. Not sure if they will expect other IT positions to pick up the slack of testing like Developer, BA.. etc.

Chase thought they could offshore and automate QA too. They quickly found out you can't automate the world (in fact, only a small part of it) and needed people that knew what the he– they were doing.

You have to wonder what skin these people have in the game as they are doing the same things they knew that failed there. I am guessing they are enriching themselves at the expense of American workers yet again.

As others have said, QA is being (was) decentralized and moved back into the development groups. I'm sure some of this is cost related (no need for QA management) and some is to align with moving to Agile (the latest shiny new object). There will be QA people in one form or another and possibly (if they get their act together, lol, yeah right,) automate much of it. You still need people with a clue to review the results. Could they move some offshore to India? Yeah, probably. But good luck having enough skilled people on team over there that really understand what something is supposed to do. We still have a ton of tribal and expert knowledge in PEOPLE. You can't automate knowing why something should work a certain way or not (and if it did).

Being in this industry for a few decades I'll predict this will not go well if they get rid of QA in the US and/or move to minimal QA in India. Why? Developers often s— at doing QA and actual functional testing. There's only so much you can automate. Somebody still has to review the results and we are in the stone age when it comes to doing that sort of thing. Then what will happen if they reduce that is we will start having problems in production all over the place. Much hand wringing will happen. Somebody will come up with the brilliant idea that we need more rigorous testing, rinse and repeat.

QA manager positions are being eliminated, and they must find other work in the bank. The staff that reported to them is being merged into DEV. For now, they will still assist with testing. In the future, DEV will take over the testing as that is part of Agile - DEV tests their code using TDD and soon will also do the BDD. There is no need for separate QA team anymore. Automation is part of TDD and BDD, so no need for Automation Engineers. Eventually all QA, as it is now, will be gone. If you are in QA, you should be reskilling for another job. Those positions will all be eliminated over time. It may take a year or so but it will happen.

ley me turn your question around for you.

  1. Can the employee function be done remote? if yes, go to #2
  2. Do you earn more than an indian national sitting in india? If yes, go to #3
  3. Yes.

In fact, you can take any job, not just QA, and apply the same flowchart.

How do you know if you earn more than a QA national sitting in india?

Easy.

I will help you understand:

  1. Most indian nationals sitting in india make less than 30000usd per year base or about 2500usd monthly AT THE MOST.
  1. Their health insurance there is so cheap, the company not only pays for the employee, but also pays for the spouse, kids and the extended family at no cost to the employee. Im betting total this is less than 1500 usd per year or less than 120 per month usd.
  1. Office space in india is MUCH less than usa. Around 60usd a head per month.
  1. Telecommunications in india is an additional cost because wells requires dual route in case of failure, but its shared among all employees. The cost per employee, just to be generous say its 20usd a month (and its probably a lot less)
  1. USA fte earn at least 70k per year as base or 5800 per month.
  1. The first 6% of your wages up to 7k of income are paid to fund unemployment which comes out to 40usd per month. India unemployment cost is so low its negligable.
  1. Wells pays half your ssi insurance. This is about 6.2% of your wages. at 70k this is about 320 per month. India has social insurance but it is so low jn cost its negligable.
  1. Wells pays medicare in form of fica. Fica insurance is about 1.45% of all your wages and there is no cap. At 70k, this comes out to around 70usd per month. For india, they dont pay anything for this.
  1. Most employees have an office, a phone, etc....and in usa, commerical lease/realestate is expensive. This is a fudge, but im guessing office space in usa averages at least 400usd a month.
  1. Next, you might sue wells for an unsafe environment - like an OSHA lawsuit. In india? nope. USA is litigous - theres risk to the company. And risk has cost. For giggles say we under estimate to 25 usd a month.
  1. Also, the company has spoken contract for profit sharing and 401k match at 6% of salary. Using 70k as salary, that cost is 350 usd a month. (India doesnt have this)

So doing the math.....

India employee = A + B + C + D
or about 2900 usd a month

Usa employee = D + E + F + G + H + I + J + K
or about 20 + 5800 + 40 + 320 + 70 + 400 + 25 + 350 = 7250 per month

So, the price of 1 usa employee is more than double the price to have 1 indian employee.

The only thing JPM style management cares about is minimizing expenses and maximizing profit.

Employees are expenses.

Draw your own conclusions.

Think of it this way - when a cat catches a rabbit, does the cat have any sympathy for the rabbit or any remorse?

Chainsaw and his cronies are that cat.

Guess which part of that hunt YOU are.

As stated by one of the posters, some QA teams have been rolled into respective tech groups that actually own the applications being tested.

Those QA testers who have meets or above in their mid year reviews, may escape the first round of layoffs. There is the plan however to get rid of their managers first, and then the rest of the testers who do not learn automation testing, as they will be replaced by automation testers in India.

Automation testers or Automation Engineers are currently being heavily recruited in India.

Not that I'm aware of but like another poster said they're moving QA people into their respective tech group that actually owns the applications being tested. They are releasing QA contractors though, but releasing contractors is across the bank, not just in QA.

Sounds like a poorly thought out move. I'm sorry for all the stress you're experiencing. I was a consultant at WF in CE until March 30th.
