Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Wire Techs SE Only SENIORITY list just enter month, day, year

Am a Wire tech but if you are a core guy that's been with the company 25 + years take the money and go. For other young core guys could raise their families. ALL YOU GUYS ARE WORRIED ABOUT NOT HAVING NOTHING TO DO WHILE YOUNG CORE GUYS ARE WORRIED ABOUT HOW THEY'RE GOING TO FEED THEIR FAMILY.

20 years of service. 45 years old. Little one in 1st grade the other in 3rd. At&t is our family's only income. Two Engineering degrees. Surplussed (4) times already, first time was in my third year of service as an Engineer. Not planning to take the offer but will probably be surplussed in the future. Please don’t say all 20 year guys should take the offer. I need to work somewhere for many more years. When surplussed I’ll know I always hit my numbers, perfect attendance for all 20 years, and never used a day of FMLA. If they paid me in the last 20 years I was there. I am still working every holiday and OT even this week. It is hard to understand how so many are going to be let go with so much work out there. Midwest CO tech.

I guess I will make you really mad - I have 50 years service and no intention of leaving - I am not big and fat as some of you refer to older people - I run 8 miles a day and just recently completed my second master’s degree - I have been surplus 7 times in my career - I was an operator - cable splicer - mtc splicer - NOC technician - worked in electrical build - and now as a co tech - some advise to you that make age discrimination remarks - you will be the first to go because I am sure someone will file an EEO complaint against you and your butt will be kicked out the door - I am sure ATT would love to get rid of people that have your type of attitude - people that discriminate in one area usually discriminate in all areas - pay attention to what is going on in our country!

25 years is not that many especially when you have 3 kids in college and 50 yrs old. It is a lot easier for a young person to walk into a new job and even one with more security then at 50 when t is very hard to get another job. Have you heard of age discrimination? Ignorant statements

OP, you are misinformed. This offer to Core techs is mainly for those close to social security and/or over 30+ years seniority. Most of the senior 30+ year service techs hired in at 18-20 years old. Those that the company hired in late 90’s early 2000’s were various ages ranging from 20’s to 50’s in age. So nearly 100% of techs under 30 years service or modified retirement are too young. At least you younger techs have a much better chance of finding another job compared to those in their late 40’s plus. Age discrimination is real.

The old Ma Bell used to have mass hirings when the older techs were approaching 25+ years service to train all the new young 18-20 year old techs that were going to replace them after they retired. It was a continuity of skills and craft passed from one generation to the next. After Ma bell was broken up the Rbocs broke that mold and the poor decision to hire Prem/Wire techs and not have them in the Core to be trained on all aspects of the job will be interesting after the 20+ of years service techs leave/retire.

My advice to all younger employees is put as much as you can afford into your 401k. I started with only putting in $10 a week when I first started over 20 years ago. It’s like making a snowman, it takes a while to see any results but it starts to really grow after several years. Add a portion of each raise too and you better take the company match while you can then put it in the index fund and leave it. Mine’s almost 200k even with the two big downturns in the market.

Ive been where you are raising a family and starting at the bottom, I still have two at home. A lot of the younger techs were saying the same thing when I started. The more senior techs at that time talked about how a lot of them were surplussed to other areas and off payroll during their career. Your day will come if not with this company then somewhere else. I worked with several other companies before landing here and going to ride this as long as I can. Good luck to all!

Was there a new link dropped that was up to date and includes all SE states and not just Florida? The link that was dropped yesterday was for Q3 2019 and only for Florida.

Hey dummy , number 1 , I already gave you all the link that shows you the seniority of all wire techs in SE. Number 2, someone with 25 years is likely only in their 40s. About 20 years too young to retire unless you expect them to not have medical or dental.
