Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Lay offs and Pay

What i dont understand is why the company is giving big Pay rises and Bonuses year on year and then making people redundant. I cant figure it out. Isnt it better to freeze the pay but not layoff people?

My raises sure weren’t ‘who I knew’. In general, there is a good reason why percents and salaries are not good to discuss between employees -sort of like politics and religion - since it mostly just causes discontent even among those who were content. And I also agree that judgements can’t be made on this anon site since there is absolutely no way to compare circumstances. However, being female in IT, I had to wonder if mine was due to ATT’s new promise to ‘equal pay’. Since I don’t know my male counterparts salaries, I did wonder if they were quietly enacting salary ‘corrections’ for those the company identified as not being ‘equal’.

https://www.sec.gov/divisions/corpfin/cf-noaction/14a-8/2016/paxworld121916-14a8-incoming.pdf

“Shareholders request that AT&T prepare a report by October 2017, at reasonable expense and omitting proprietary information, on the Company’s policies and goals to reduce the gender pay gap. For investors to assess the Company’s strategy and performance, the report should include the percentage pay gap between male and female employees, policies to address the pay gap and reduction targets.”

I'm not sure you'll get one at the moment but who knows other people seem to be getting, so maybe a case of who you know, not what you know.

Good luck.

I'm going to ask my manager for a raise, I only got 3% so way out. Where are all these people getting the rises and what job are they doing?

What do you reckon?

To the last message surely cant be underpaid 12% year on year. Just un heard of, I don't see other companies giving these type of rises, especially when we're in a situation.

The management need to get a grip as this has spiralled out of control.

All you people jealous and discontent about salary- calm down. You have no idea of any circumstances or details. No one gets haphazard bonuses or raises. Either people were too far under their sliding scale rate for their titles/positions (remember they streamlined and changed salary scales not that long ago) and/or there were other circumstances with re-orgs, or perhaps they were really outperforming others.

This company is going downhill fast with people milking it, obscene rates, these need to be identified and sorted. We need to reduce all outgoings and this large debt. This covid will be the end if were not careful.

12% this needs looking at nearly 10 times inflation, the company cant afford these, and some of you are saying your not doing much slackers, hope your weeded out asap.

you maybe on a good number doing nothing with a 12% pay and bonus, what about the rest of us. I hope the management are going to review these huge pay rises which are unsustainable.

We all would like these, how are these being afforded, it's going to result in a big culling as the costs are too high in this company to be competitive and profitable. I'm happy to take a cut in order to survive.

"My biggest gripe over the years is how suits at the top make unbelievably stupid changes to everything done at the field level without first asking any of us whether its a good idea or not . Zero input from those using the tools, knocking on doors, climbing the poles and driving the vehicles ! ZERO !!!"

They don't think they need too, they think they know more, they drive the business with their heads down looking at all the metrics they come up with on their spreadsheets. Like generals who never been to battle sending people marching over the hill to die.

And is anyone asking who hired all these employees that it is now decided are no longer needed? Poor business planning. Maybe find out who was responsible for allowing this to go on for so long and give them the axe!.

The largest demographic at AT&T is 45-55. Is 55 now the new retirement age?

Formula is immediate 10% pay cut for the greater good or the other option is more layoffs. I'm sure everyone would stump the cut for the greater good.

Other normal things like travel, phones, cars, management layers, allowances need to be cut drastically.

"I am in ATO, technical title, level 2 no reports- have also received over 10% raise past 2 years running"

It's TRUE people are getting these rises especially in the UK I know a few that have had them. That's a total of pay and bonus.

We need to cut the pay bill immediate freeze on rises and cut no of employees, where is this money coming from.

No wonder we are in $150billion debt, immediate action needed to turn this tanker if we are to survive.

I am in ATO, technical title, level 2 no reports- have also received over 10% raise past 2 years running. I was shocked as well, no idea how that was possible but wasn’t going to question it! Perhaps it was due to the competitive “Individual” award (different than the general annual bonus) that was only allowed to be given to a certain percent of employees. Maybe I got the raise instead and others received the bonus award. Even with those 2 years of high raises, I am still only a little past the 50% of the salary scale for my current job. I’ve been a T employee for over 10 years.

@zas burped: "... T is a big old legacy corporation with too many [...] well past their retirement age"

Even assuming the out-of-date age of 65 for retirement, it's clear this imbecile has no idea what they are saying. There is no way there are "many" employees over 65 much less 67 or 72.

Just another poorly made point, filled with internal inconsistency and invented facts in a lame attempt to argue that older workers are unfit, not needed, and an overall burden on the company.

In short, it's clear that this mess was the work of some precocious millennial who is used to having mommy and daddy tell them how clever they are, how important they are, and how smart they are.

Boring.

I like your post but keep in mind that stock holders and board of directors want as big of a dividend as possible and to keep it going. That's tied to the CEO's top performance criteria to make sure it happens, which ruins everything else in the list.

The reality is T is a big old legacy corporation with too many bodies , many well past their retirement age, but because of one circumstance or another stick around. T is no different than companies like Ford or IBM or GE in this respect. Old legacy businesses with lots of generational driftwood. Bottom line T needs to be cut by about 50% before it becomes nimble and profitable. And to all the boomers still working here and whining about it, look at it this way if major cuts aren't made now, your're going to take a massive haircut on your forthcoming pension.. so it's in your best interest to retire and let T shed uneeded folks.

Really?

Freezing pay does nothing to reduce current costs.

In case you did not notice, I don’t think any bonus targets were released for 2020, at least I never saw them. I never received the email that is sent at the end of qtr to check on the progress of meeting the bonus goals.

I keep seeing posts about surplus and Covid. There is no connection - it was announced last year and included in the 4Q results that employee related expenses would be reduced by $1.5BILLION by EOY 2020. It is very likely Covid may result in additional people being let go. These planned cuts are part of the cost cutting initiated by Elliott.

Okay.... First, no way to I believe @ygw is getting 10-12% raises every year. Average raise for ATO, the largest division in AT&T, is always between 2 and 3 percent. Has been for 20+ years.

Secondly, they can't cut our pay & bonuses without taking similar action for themselves. That makes for bad publicity. Last time they did that was back in 2009 following the 2008 housing market crash, and they held pay flat.

And they don't have to eliminate the bonus plan. They've already set the bar so high, that we never get 100% payout anymore. All they have to do is make the goals higher and they can save money. This is totally disconnected from executive compensation, so they can still do whatever they want for themselves.

@ygw: "... Ive been getting 10-12% rises for the last few years..."

I call BS. Unless you're part of Big Stink's inner circle the biggest raise you saw was maybe 4%. the only people getting double-digit percent raises are top C-suite douchenozzles.

And if you are one of them, then you absolutely deserve to be sh–canned.

@day+15ofIJy2 You talk about old people and they should be cast aside. Time moves quickly and before you know it, you will be what you consider old. How you you like it if the generation behind you talks about you being removed because you are old?. ... GROW UP!

There are WAY too many old people in ATT. No one ever gets terminated from this company. The old farts are getting 7 weeks of vacation. A lot of them, take off the months of November and December. Most of the old farts are simply collecting a paycheck, until they are forced out. ATT mgmt should be held accountable for the old people daycare they have created. Just imagine how much money att will save on insurance, after they get rid of 100k old people!!! I was in a large meeting the other day in Richardson for ATO. Everyone was over 45, and there were people using canes and scooters! There were HR questions. The questions resolved around sick time and insurance coverage. I was mortified. No wonder ATO is being completely gutted

A few even a better ideas. Each of these will save considerable money, rejuvenate the company, and save considerable jobs:

  1. Make top-executive bonuses 100% tied to performance, rather than just given.
  2. Eliminate all stock awards to top-level executives so they will de-emphasize stock performance.
  3. Stop all corporate buy-back of stock
  4. Reduce the dividend by 50-75% until corporate debt & profitability improve.
  5. Eliminate 50% of the SVP, EVP, VP, AVP positions. Way too many useless titles and inflated salaries.
  6. Halt overly-generous retirement packages to top executives

But I'm sou can see why this will never happen.

Well Ive been getting 10-12% rises for the last few years its crazy why, its just makes the situation worse. I guess there needs to be big culling now and covid is a good excuse to lose 15% of staff doing nothing or little, Keep your head down before they find you i guess.
