Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

what AT&T IS NOT:

The role of HR in the modern workplace with an increased focus on fostering healthy business culture that fosters both productivity and employee welfare. An important aspect of this expanded role is in crisis management. While even under normal market conditions, robust HR involvement in an organization is vital, in times of crisis it becomes critical.

When a crisis hits it’s imperative to protect business systems, processes, and profits, but the most important asset to be protected is employees. Placing workers’ wellbeing at the forefront of crisis management strategies will contribute to the sustainability of your business and this requires opening up effective lines of communication.

The first step in protecting the mental health of your employees is giving them the space to talk about how they’re feeling, including any impact on their productivity. This openness, however, doesn’t come naturally to employees in cutthroat job markets who are fighting to keep their jobs. That’s why it’s so important for HR to openly and explicitly promote honest communication.

I'm one of the few remaining legacy DTV employees and I can tell you firsthand that me and my DTV colleagues were horrified and disgusted by the toxic AT&T "culture"

Meetings are like high school football pep-rallies, where the so-called leaders get up and try and pump enthusiasm with pithy and childish nonsense, even including intro songs. Then came the pyramid scheme/religious cult indoctrination of constantly hyping the company at every chance and only saying positive things about it - with the expectation that the people in attendance would follow suit.

The whole company seems to be structured on brainwashing and conforming. Don't question anything. Obey and revere so-called leaders. Pay fealty and kneel at the altar of the corporation. Worship the craven image of the deathstar globe. Always place trust in those above and corporate wisdom over your own judgment, ethics, and instinct.

I've never worked at any company with such a deluded and perverse compulsion to put so much effort and need to have employees behave as if they weren't going to work, but were off to do the bidding of the messiah.

And HR is leading the charge. They treat everything as if it were rainbows. Bad news is delivered with a laugh and "rah rah" enthusiasm. Calling HR reps cheerleaders is spot on. They brainlessly regurgitate corporate slogans at the expense of caring for employees.

Welcome to the Stepford company,

HR is nothing more than an errand boy for the executives. Their main prerogative is to ensure hires and fires and workplace disputes are done to the letter of the law so as not to expose the company to liability. After that their about passing along whatever bs company line the executives want you to obey.. that's it, they have no real authority and certainly not their for the worker.

It’s called toxic positivity and it’s the new AT&T model—it amounts to coercion to conform—now they are even telling you how you are supposed to feel. And they want you to be positive and cheerful in the face of devastating circumstances (loss of jobs/livelihoods, COVID-19 pandemic, economic depression, with no jobs available).

In other words, they want you to deny your appropriate feelings of sadness, grief, anger, uncertainty and behave in an way that dishonors both your feelings and reality.

They have taken the toxic environment to a whole new level.

The 15th will be the day. Look for the stock price to jump and all those with stock options to cash in!! This will be a good talking point for the 2nd quarter call!!

HR is a department that could easily be cut by 50%. In addition all overhead departments like Finance, Legal, Compliance, Marketing, Advertising and Asset Protection could easily absorb 50% reduction of headcount. There are too many redundant and overlapping functions in each of them!!

Fact, during a VP hosted call and after announcing surplus action, the HR partner comes on the phone to address questions with an extremely gleeful and positive voice. No disrespect to all you female cheerleaders out there, but it was extremely inappropriate. People are losing their jobs while miss hr partner is talking like we were getting another round of bonus.
