Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Hope you are happy..

I have been with T for a long time and must admit that the majority of leadership are insufficiently competent. The key to promotion at T is to not make waves. People who know what they are doing tend to voice their opinions and push back when decisions are wrong.... a.k.a. making waves. Therefore, the more competent people seldom get promoted. In the leadership ranks, the company is so concerned about the appearances of diversity that they constantly put people in positions for which they literally have no qualifications. How many times have you seen someone with a background in accounting put in charge of engineering or IT teams? But ... they don't make waves, so they keep moving on up. Our upper leadership team is generally unqualified to make technology decisions and they really don't know enough to avoid the pitfalls. But look how diverse they are!!! These moves made some of you and some investors feel better along the way. We'll see how happy you are in the unemployment line. Maybe you'll learn something. Probably not.

Truth - all they want is yes men/women and have those yes men/women weed out the people who make waves no matter how technically inept they are. they want people technically efficient at spreadsheets and that is about it.

The c-suite drives everything by metrics, they just have their heads down looking at spreadsheets.
If you want to move up, just come up with a metric that makes you look great. It's don't matter if it is real, it can be fake like the c-suite.

@sdd+15gZNBSK Absolutely!

Ive been around long enough to see dozens of re-orgs. Nothing changes. Executives have to put on a show and execute a plan to improve operations & cost structure. The plan doesn't actually have to work....only the fact that some kind of action is being taken matters. Corporate likes to shuffle executives to broaden their knowledge & skills, in theory. This routinely fails because each new 'leader' has their own vision about the way they think things should run...even if they have no direct knowledge or experience in that area of the business.

With all the announcements, all I basically saw was a shuffle around of the SAME people at the top. And with the timer warner CTO coming in, an extra layer going in for some

How are things going to change with the same m0r0ns still in charge? You can get rid of all the mid managers you want, but with those same ones at the top, why does anyone think it will go any different this time?

I think McElfresh makes quite the waves - by putting into question the middle management
If the company makes the correct decisions on job cutting - the question is why weren't these people laid off earlier? how much money the company lost by keeping them until big layoff waves come from above - why isn't mid management proactive there
These layoff waves are signs that the leadership of the company doesn't trust the lower layers and have to trigger these waves.
But at the same time - if one VP let's say was proactive and his group is well adjusted to business needs - with a layoff wave, he's really in trouble - so exactly that discourages the proactivity, ironically .
In my opinion, there is PLENTY of fat to trim in the company (by fat I mean folks which are highly incompetent at all levels, not only leadership) Many folks here feel entitled to their jobs just cause ..

On the contrary, I noticed at AT&T mostly white and red neck people are the ones who do NOT make waves, and so get promoted fast (look at stinky, mcelfresh, donovan, .....). Colored people most of time have very advanced science degrees and always make waves so they are mostly at bottom of food chain.
