Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Rank and Yank

At the start of a weekly call last week, senior managers were joking about the "rank and yank" about to hit employees. I was disgusted by their callousness and actually hope it happens to senior management instead.

This company is a cesspool of twisted individuals. Period.

I was told by our manager months ago that 20% of the team had to be 1-2. I'm at the literal bottom of the hierarchy in EIT in a non-hub location. I have no idea if that's still true, but there is a strong emphasis on reviews this year.

So reviews/rankings are completed in July. Decisions are made and packages put together in August/September. Folks are notified in October and out in December. In the meantime everyone is expected to be positive, concentrate on the work, and act like all is great. That sound about right?

Someone else picked up my post and reposted it as new thread. I did not do that.

20% 1s and 2s is a fact.

They are finding creative ways to terminate for cause.

Please do not lie to folks. The guidance and yes I stress the word guidance was to rate 1-5 like the old days.

I can confirm the email came out Friday to us as people leaders- this was supposed to happen end of year but senior leadership determined this was needed mid years- if u already held a mid year please pull back up and rate them before 7/31.

opinion based, not fact based.

if you get whacked, take pictures of everything and LAWYER up!

Especially get pictures of prior ratings.

If you are over 40, this doubly applies to you.

Sign nothing.

Immediately seek legal counsel.

This downturn may last a lot longer than you can remain solvent.

Be sure to claim and receive every nickle.

If Chukkie can make over $32,000,000 per year and get away with it, you can claim a few extra thousand from the bank to tide you over.

Good luck!

I just heard as well that midyears will be marked on a point system of 1-5, 5 being the best. So it seems that the rumors are in fact true. Didn't Jack Welch at GE have 10% culling every year? I think that was one of his management philosophies. Its an abrupt turn for WF however, as they historically have been much more lenient of their staff. This has potential to trash the team concept though, and turn it all into a giant personality contest. Ugh.

Not sure what groups some folks work in, but yes, mid year reviews will have a 1 - 5 rating. However, I've never been asked to rate a certain percentage of people as under performing, nor have I actually rated someone as underperforming (I have an awesome team). Haven't been asked to do that for mid year reviews either, although the distribution GUIDANCE is in fact to rate 20% as a 1 or 2, but it's not a mandate or requirement.

@iok unfortunately it’s very real for year end 20% in the 1 or 2 bucket. Fact.

@jos+15VrN6RB managers haven't been asked to rank 20% of their team with does not perform. That's not even an option in mid-years.

Things could become very brutal, cut-throat, and tragic for many of you. Stack Ranking is the worst.
It's sad when people are laid off, and it can also be difficult for the "survivors" who remain. Indeed, I got tired of private sector mismanagement and their search for quick profits, so I went to the public sector 20 years ago. My public organization provided a service to the community, and it provided very generous benefits to its employees: Training, a nice office environment, and a defined benefit pension plan. Sweet.
Best wishes to you.
xx Retired and lovin' it.

So just heard that midyear reviews will be rated with 1-5 rankings and 5 being the highest. Not terrible. What was said is that managers have been asked to rank 20% of direct reports with “does not perform”. What wasn’t said is if this is at a department level or individual manager level. I have to think department level.

Hmm interesting my management team hates this whole idea and system. We care about our employees though, I guess not all groups do. FYI this sounds like fake news to me from the OP.

Much like the gubmint, repeat the lie repearedly until it becomes fact. If that doesn’t work then make up something else. Rinse/repeat
