Be sure your 401k loan is closed. The loan is immediately due else it will be deemed a distribution with hefty taxes. side bar note to this is CARES act lets you take 100k tax free, so if you are under that you are fine.
Dont use your vacation time during termination period. I would recommend rescheduling all pto 60 DAYS after July 14 if possible. Its extra survival money they have to pay you.
Remember the company is not your buddy. Nor your lawyer. Sign nothing if you feel you are being unfairly singled out. Seek legal representation, especially if you are over 50 (!). There are special laws that apply to older employees.
Stop spending. No for real. Start trimming unnecessary services like netflix, hulu, and any other online service you currently pay for. Those small transactions add up. Reduce them asap.
Put together a financial plan - my recommendation is if you have a home equity loan or credit cards, draw them down 100% and put the money into an account and dont spend it unless absolutely necessary. It will be harder to get cash in a depression era and banks can limit your access down the road. Who cares about credit reports. Its survival time.
Make a plan to sell assets you dont need. Car, boat, house, whatever. This could be an extremely long downturn. Wells Fargo isnt the only bank doing this.
Plant a garden. Find where the farmers markets are. Learn where the farms are.
Buy from them in bulk and learn to preserve food. Learn to cook beans and rice.
Cut as many costs as possible.
For retraining, avoid any job that can be offshored. Electrician, plumber, hvac, heavy equipment operator are all trades that they cant send overseas.
Consider downshifting your lifestyle. Its not a bad thing to be humble. Think about opening your home to taking care of the elderly or the disabled. You may need a state or local license, but at least its cashflow.
We are all entering a severe downturn.
Banks and corporations are also hurting and its why they are trimming expenses just like we need to.
Dont expect help is coming...the latest signal from the senate is more relief checks are coming but only for those that earn less than 40k a year. The senate is likely not going to be helping you.
