Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Mandatory BYOD Coming

We recently found out that BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) will become mandatory as of August 25th, 2022. No more company paid cell phones.

There was a "Leader" in the meeting, and it sounds like they're playing hardball on this. Any exceptions must have pre-approval from a CEO-2 level executive.

This will be phased in via "natural attrition" over the next 2 years as existing cell phone plans expire and no new corporate cell phones will be available. The two year phase-in is to avoid "early termination fees" from existing plans.

WF will only support iPhone and iPad initially. If employees do not already own an iPhone, they will have to purchase one when their current corporate cell phone plan expires. There is talk of supporting Samsung Galaxy devices "at a later date".

There is Wells Fargo administered software that must be installed on a personal cell phone for "compliance" with this policy.

Here's where it got interesting. One of the engineers who is on the BYOD team was in the meeting. I don't know if the "leader" knew that ahead of time. Some people posed questions directly to that engineer and some of the answers didn't exactly align with what the "leader" was saying.

Most notable was:
They will be able to "patch" the operating systems on our personal devices (that's a red flag - if they can do that, they can do anything).
They will have the ability to "discover" data/apps/antivirus/etc on our personal devices.
They will be able to track the devices location (the "Leader" chimed in and said that they don't plan on doing that).
They will be able to track usage, website history, and text messages (the Leader also said they would not be doing that).

The Leader said that if "legal" wanted to confiscate your personal device, you would have no choice but to turn it over to them.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would be very reluctant to allow WF to install anything on my personal phone. Especially if I'm paying for it, and especially if they can then control it, and even take it away from me. I also question how they can require that I purchase an iPhone for usage on their behalf.

You don’t have to use byod (aka using the software) but you won’t get a Corp device any longer. I chose to not do byod, but since I’m ft wfh, I have to use my personal cell for calls. I don’t list the number in teams works or my email, as it is personal and not an official work number.

Been working fine for me. I just no longer answer emails while on vacation, late evenings or weekends..

Don’t be surprised when they stop issuing laptops. With virtual desktop you will be able to log in from any device. They will hav terminals on every desk for you to log into. When you have to or want to work from home u will have to use your own pc. It will be spun that you now have the option to use whatever hardware you want.

Wouldn't obsess on this just being a Wells issue its just trend all companies are moving toward. Call center type people are not only required to use their own computer but must install intrusive applications to monitor their activity. As some one else said your data aint yours. In fact Wells can wipe your personal BYOD phone for cause.

I plan to do some contracting after Wells, will buy a low end Chromebook for work wont be anything on there of mine.

Good

Too many colleagues have them because they have 2 people reporting to them so get to call themselves a "manager." They really don't need them. it is a waste.

WF telling employees who are required to carry a mobile device for their job function to go out buy it themselves is probably going to result in a lawsuit.

There is no set of circumstances in which I would give this company access to a personal device. Heck, next they’ll be asking for keys to your house. Ridiculous.

BYOD is standard across the entire financial services industry. WF is just late to the game as usual.

Citi phased out BlackBerry and mandated BYOD SIX YEARS ago...

WIM/WFA has used personal IPhone's for years. I had never felt that I wanted to use one. I didn't want to be bothered by "WORK" when I was off. There was nothing that couldn't wait until I was back in the office. LOL!

You have to also agree you won’t go on any websites, and will be responsible managing your phone’s own security. This could backfire and bite you in the rear.

Employee business expenses are tax deductible if you itemize. It doesn’t cover the whole cost of course, but it’s something. Just make sure to keep the business expenses separate - easy if you have a separate device.

Does this include WiFi Jetpacks as well? I use one for their stupid antiquated laptop to connect to their slow as molasses VPN. This was before the pandemic. Now, I get bumped off or kicked off if I’m lucky enough to connect.

I have NEVER connected their laptop, iPhone, or any corporate owned device or software to my personal home network. I would never let them put an app on my personal iPhone. I have 2 iPhones, one for WF, and my personal one. Call me “2 phone Jones.” Nothing personal is on the corporate owned devices. Not a picture, an email, nothing.

Pathetic systems. Patchwork and stitched together by a thread network infrastructure. Nothing works, nothing has ever worked. Can’t use Zoom, not enough bandwidth to support the entire bank working remotely.

I’m done with this company. I can’t cut thru the red tape, I’m tired of the politics between groups and I’m sick of this monarchy of power these managers seem entitled to. Like I need to ask 6 different dotted line managers for their approval before I can get anything done. I sit on conference calls all day and nothing gets done. Nothing gets approved. No progress made, ever.

I got assigned to a manager who was brought in with some sizzle and shine BS resume and pedigree from an Ivy League school with a Master’s in Music. Yes Music. Go play your effing flute and write music. She doesn’t know jack about network infrastructure. Got the job thru a friend in recruiting. I’m fed up and I’ve had enough.

I hold zero stock, my 401k match is rebalances and allocated to other funds monthly. Get out while you can. Take the package and leave.

Already interviewing and got an exit plan. I hope each of who have experienced any of the above get out too.

If the company doesn’t provide it then screw em. I get company expense but this is basically not to pay early term fees for the 50k employees they are lying off. Everyone should simply shut your phone off after hours or not check emails on Pto until you know if you are one of the people on the chopping block or not

If the information is on my personal device, then I own the data. Why would I subsidize the bank by buying my own iPhone to let them use space in it. This is just another cheap move by management. Plus, seems like other companies are going in the opposite direction and buying phone for their employees.

Will be similar (if not actually) to Microsoft InTune. They'll be able to remote wipe devices and effectively be admin on your personal phone.

Anyone allowing their company to have admin on anything but a secondary phone, only used specifically for that purpose, is a nut job.

They can dream on. If they want me to have a cell phone, they better provide it; and they can forget about calling me afterhours. I am not going to buy the phone of their choice and have them monitoring my activity and telling me how I can use it. CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP!!

Take the work phone away. I like that. Will actually take PTO and not be answering emails all day. They are really stressing now “take your PTO for mental health reasons”. So we should all adhere

for technology/BCP folks there could be rotational or dedicated services designed that don't require maintenance of individual mobile phone plans. There are plenty of options for this.

That's fine, which just means I won't have a "work" phone anymore. Then I'd actually be forced to disconnect on PTO.

“ how many people are so critical to a 9-5 type of business, actually needing a mobile phone for the needs of the business rather than own convenience? You can go without, using soft phone to redirect calls to personal mobile phone when needed.”

It’s not the 9-5 day hours. For technology folks it’s the after hours pages, texts, emails that we don’t necessarily want to be tethered to our laptop, but monitor via our phones.

“ Coming soon... purchase your own laptop, desk for the office”

Close, but coming soon will be no more corporate approved laptops. You will use your personal machine to connect to a vdi session and then do all your work on that virtual machine.

It’s ludicrous but Wells trying to cut costs doesn’t surprise me at all. All the chatter of they not going to look at your personal stuff is baloney! Separate the 2 phones!

how many people are so critical to a 9-5 type of business, actually needing a mobile phone for the needs of the business rather than own convenience? You can go without, using soft phone to redirect calls to personal mobile phone when needed. You'll avoid all the drama of BYOD participation and privacy breach implications. Problem solved.

I worked for two different companies in the past that had voluntary BYOD programs. Both programs, in fine print, explained that if we chose to use our own devices, we would have to hand them over if there were any legal discoveries ordered in regards to the company.

If you have company data on your personal cellphone, it’s not really yours anymore.
