Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Take your vacation push?

Anyone else find it interesting the sudden push / encouragement from the company to take your vacation time? Received a "NEWS NOW" email on topic yesterday, and noted the feel good "I needed a day" article in the Insider today encouraging the same. I have been around long enough to understand this is not coincidence. Best guess is it is purely an effort to reduce the amount that has to be paid out in unused PTO when thousands are cut from the payroll soon.

I agree it’s probably because they want to see who can actually take time off (therefore isn’t an ‘essential’ employee to them), and/or so they don’t have to pay you after surplus. But also remember PTO is accrued over the year, so by June you have only ‘earned’ half your days. If you take more and then get surplused, they are allowed to recover it via taking it out of your last check or severance.

Listen, unless you are absolutely forced to do so, DO NOT TAKE YOUR VACATION FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN VACATION YOU WANT TO TAKE.

IBM just literally did the same thing and as soon as their mandatory date passed, they laid off half of the yosemite people they just got from T.

The only reason they want you to do this is to remove a financial liability from their finance results - unpaid vacation that is accrued has to be kept for only that purpose which is why they have to pay out your unused vacation time if you leave before the end of the year.

If they are asking you to do this, it's because they are planning to lay people off in your area. Taking the vacation will not prevent the layoff from happening. It only reduces the amount of vacation time you might get paid for or be able to use after being told you're no longer needed.

Nope not going to burn my PTO now that you think you don't need me. I will use it when the world is running again and there are things to do.

I know people like you. The fact that you're able to take a month or more off at once tells me that you really don't do much.

not true you bitter bug. most of us have large workloads with new surprise to do list every day. Planning a vacation during this virus - with demand for capacity - you can't dump your workload that quadrupled on to your team so we work because we own it. Will your L2 AM do the work when the virus settles and everyone takes vacation at once. Nope. And when we get back to the office, it will be a dump.

"I save ALL my vacation for the end of the year. Too bad for T. "

I know people like you. The fact that you're able to take a month or more off at once tells me that you really don't do much. I would count on being axed if I was you. Also, you need to be aware that when they pay out the PTO at surplus, they pro rate it based on where you're at on the calendar...they won't pay you for all of the time you might have been eligible for in a full calendar year.

I save ALL my vacation for the end of the year. Too bad for T. Around my organization, they LOVE to wack at the very end of the year. Let them pay me cash for my unused vacation.

I don’t think there is anything behind it other than folks aren’t taking vacation days right now. Why would they? Can’t really go anywhere. They just don’t want a mad rush to use all your days at the end of the year. Use it or lose it. My wife’s company sent out a similar email, but they changed their policy in that they can’t roll over their unused days.

Yup and I told my union rep the same thing and they were like that’s not what it’s for you need to read the email. I said I did that’s what I got from it.

If they really care about the well being of the workforce, it’s called comp time. Those frontline tech’s who has been working OT supporting capacity build for covid 19 can use it.

Encouraging people to take time off after declaring massive cost cutting is subtle, way to go bean counters and lawyers. Must’ve the same brain trust that came with contract pricing for steaming tv.
