I am guessing by "engineer" that means you don't have an engineering degree. I have noticed these "engineers" have been shown the door in large numbers over the last few years. Saw lots of folks (some of them quite competent mind you) over the years go from a somewhat technical role in say Field Operations, into an engineering opening, hired by a friend or colleague that they have known for a while. When the herd needed to be thinned they were the first ones shown the door.

SBC did not "buy" Cingular. Your history is incorrect. Cingular was a joint venture between SBC and Bell South.
As someone that has been here through all of that, the downturn was palpable after the acquisition of AT&T, a dying company. The "brand value" and the decision to change the name of the new company to AT&T was a mistake. No one cared, people weren't going to flock to this company because it's name was AT&T. Most inexplicable though, were the decisions made to place leadership folks in this failed, dying landline company (AT&T) in leadership positions in this new wireless company. It has directly resulted in all of the colossal missteps over the last 13 years.

They set the policies; they brought us to where we are today...massive debt, undervalued, and universally mocked. The only thing they ever succeeded in is ruining people's lives, and milking this company for everything they can.
Why do some AVPs have zero reports? Most AVPs have less than 3 direct reports. It’s mostly a $170k plum hand out job.

This calls for a celebration. There are so many fat cats and they have destroyed what was a lean mean fighting machine SBC. After the acquisition of Bell South Wireless, they brought their cancerous culture which let to the current state.

Makes no sense as we keep hearing layoffs and the company is too top heavy but at the same time we continue to see the notices for 3rd, 4th & 5th level promotions....
