Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Any chance work from home will stick after this?

There are plenty of us who are not allowed to work from home otherwise, unlike tech support, but we are now doing that and there's nothing that's impeding us in our work. We are as productive as when in the office, if not more. And frankly, I prefer it this way. I know a lot of people like leaving their homes for work, but with my commute, this is so much better for me.

So what are the chances AT&T will let some of us continue working from home? Saves them office space and makes us happy - and a happy employee is a productive employee.

Agree with @1ifc+14vMVbON.

L3s and up are afraid to not look busy to their superiors (turtles all the way up). They feel they are only working when they are in meetings, and for many, that's true. While the meetings haven't stopped (nor should they), the APPEARANCE of busy-ness is more important to them. My AVP loves, just LOVES to have 3-4 people in his office most of the time, and with the glass walls we can all see how busy he is. I think he is probably freaking out a bit right now, esp with Stankey's recent video.

I wish it would stick. I’m one of those that not allowed to work from home either even though there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to. I prefer it too. I am more productive at home. I know I have been busier with working at home this last month than before. My calendar had been back to back conference calls and no they weren’t all face to face or Telepresence when I was in the office. And I have more attendance on my conference calls than before because people aren’t distracted or getting pulled into other meetings. And like you said, a happy employee is a productive employee and we’ve all been productive, at least on my program, that’s for sure. I work at a CZ location with no one from my group or even program I'm working on. Our VP just wants us there to have us there for some reason, pulling badge and VPN reports. They can’t stand it now. It’s driving them crazy, you can tell because they wouldn’t let us WFH until RS said so and they still think this will all be over tomorrow. They, at first, were trying to find something wrong with working at home, but no one reported any issues. I know they will want us back 100% in the office like before.
I don’t hear any L2s, that I know of, complaining, it’s mostly L3s+ because they want someone to manage. I know I’d rather do without my commute and sitting in an office with people I don’t work with on a daily basis. They can let these buildings go, that are currently empty, and save $.

Your manager can’t properly intimidate you when you WFH. You will return to your reporting location as ordered and say “thank you, may I have another”.

Our AVP and VP is already acting like everything will go back to normal (no WFH) for our group per what they are “hearing” from leadership and what they’ve heard from the EVP. Our VP let us know there is or may be a culture survey and solicited feedback directly but who would even mention WFH as BAU to someone who never let us before. So I’m sure the VP will put their spin on this survey and pretty sure they wouldn’t even entertain the WFH idea and how it can be even remotely carried forward as BAU in any form or fashion - but I would love it to be. I wish I could get this culture survey directly and anonymously! Has anyone here received this “culture survey”? If so, what did it say?

I worked in a CZ, prior to the corona virus, my floor is half or three quarter empty depending on the day of the week. One person, with a persistent cough, consistently sat opposite of me for no reason. We are not on the same team or work on the same projects. Great collaboration in spreading germs. I blew it off and moved. Makes me think twice about going back, some people are just inconsiderate and don't care about others.

It's going to be a very long time until anyone feels comfortable standing or sitting next to someone (I don't care how far apart you are) after this is over. For years people have gone to work sick, carrying germs. And let's not mention the poor hygiene habits of some people in general. If T were smart, they'd re-evaluate the need for all the office space they have and save money by doing away with most of it. In the end, most jobs will be offshored anyway.

One of the Three Stooges is now gone - thankfully! Good riddance to JD. He was the one that championed, or should I say shoved down the throat, this collaboration c-apulence.

Now all we need is for Ratty, Stinky, Zucher and the Board of Mis-Directors to leave.

Any job which can be done from home, can be performed anywhere in the world. Outsourcing the workforce is huge.

Watch the video just sent out by Stank. If you are non bargained for, very likely you're going to be home sooner rather than later, if you catch my drift.

be careful what you wish for, every job the company believes can be done remote (WFH) is an opportunity to move that work offshore for alot less $$$, maybe move to a few days in and a few days remote but if 100% is remote they will move it in a heartbeat to save dollars,

Hard to say, because it's just a stone's throw away from having employees WFH vs.. outsourcing all your worker bee staff , and have your contractors WFh.

I understand some management teams are already soliciting feedback on the WFH idea and how it can be carried forward as BAU

I’ve wondered the same thing. I think lots of companies will reconsider their real estate needs after this situation is over. Telecommuting never really got off the ground as a “work” concept. Maybe this changes the way companies see work.
