Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Time for Leave of Absence or voluntary Lay-off

I’m a 20 yr + Frontline Outside Tech in ATO, going to speak to HR & my manager tomorrow about a Leave of Absence or Quit. We are being placed in unsafe, unknown situations that aren’t being triaged without proper PPE. Doing too many unnecessary BAU installs & repairs that’s putting our customers and my family at risk. Asking a few questions of the customer has no bearing whether either party is contagious, both of us could be asystematic, as stated by the experts. The CDC has recommended everyone wearing a face covering because COVID-19 is so contagious that even talking to someone can transmit it. It’s spreading rapidly in my area. Mentally tired of the game of odds.

Waited long enough for the company to correct it but greed is king. My high risk daughter’s life isn’t worth someone getting an upgrade, changing their internet provider or repairing a pots line when they have a cell phone, etc... I have the same concerns for our customers. Guess my family will be on the Welfare roles depending on length of this crisis. I never thought this company would put me in this predicament, say a prayer for us and others with the same issues. Thanks

I’ve had a lot of instances where the customer either hasn’t told me or outright lied. True story, sorry sir I really need my internet to work from home because I’m sick from the flu after I’ve been inside working for a while. I was upset and let them know about it. Many times customers have said they are no one is sick but I can hear coughing, used Kleenex, medicine etc..

I hope things work out for all our employees during this crisis. We have had instances Where customer’s have lied to the techs doing install/repair about pending Covid-19 tests for themselves during the precall questionnaire the company is mandating because They wanted their services installed/fixed...imagine that. Do what’s best for you and your family if you’ve already used your 160 hours that AT&T is allowing. Let’s hope their disability company that processes these claims doesn’t come back and deny them all due to technicalities on paperwork from the doctor as they are so we’ll known for....

Don't quit. Safety first. Just refuse to go inside homes. End of story.....

I agree with your assessment that there is risk doing essential living activities. The OP concerns are with non essential work (that was specified) that is taking unnecessary risk for all concerned. He/She was talking about mitigation because any reduction of interactions, the better your odds (common sense). That’s why there is social distancing, shelter in place, making purchases in quantity, etc... all risk mitigation.

OP, hope and pray everything goes well for your family. Sad to see people’s lives changed forever over AT&T’s short sighted gains. It will make me rethink what companies I do business with in the future. Everyone was in denial at the start but there isn’t any excuses now. It’s apparent, GREED over employees SAFETY.

Your concerns are legitimate, but I look at it this way. You can forget to clean your hands after pumping gas, pushing a shopping cart, or pushing an elevator button then touching your face. We all go to buy food, how do you know if someone was asymptomatic in the store before you were there or while you were there? You just have to live more cautiously and use common sense but you can’t let fear take over your life. Do your best to protect yourself and your loved ones. This is not going away any time soon.

Honestly I wouldn’t call since it’s technically not documented. I’m fact, keep in mind that HR is there to protect AT&T aka management not you. I would email your manager and also your HR rep with your concerns. Include the fact that you have a high risk issues because of your daughter. I’m sure they’ll advise you to take the 160 hrs. If they don’t tell them you aren’t putting g your family at risk and that you’re following CDC guidelines. If they fire you then you’ll have documentation that says they either ignored you or replied with something stupid.

Are you able to use the 160 hours of COVID- 19 time off request and have you seen your doctor to see if you may be high risk?

Everyone should realize that they are a cog in the wheel of profit for the company and the union. You are one of hundreds of thousands that keep the profit machine churning. You get compensated but you also take risks. We all are peons just hoping to make it to retirement. Good luck and Godspeed to all.

I agree, sending us into homes to do bonded pair installs and upgrades for people that just called in to inquire about their billing has got to come to an immediate end.

Priorities - God, Family, Country. You are making the right decision. Good luck sir, seems you made a best effort in a difficult situation of choosing between financial or health (life). Money has no meaning without the latter.

Sending up a prayer
