Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What kind of #$%&#@ company is this?!

Seriously, what kind of sh*thole company is this? I'm having to deal with a whole lot of management types above me who don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground. Even the basics they're clueless on! Craft seems to have it together and know their stuff. Management above level 1s, not so much. Gotta say, I am getting really tired of babysitting these know-nothings. The ones who did know their stuff either got surplussed or left for greener pastures away from this dinosaur of a company.

Who said anything about degree’s?? Typical union response to someone questioning union stoopidity. Big surprise you union troll, IT IS JUST A JOB and as far as ladders go, you are the very lowest rung on it. Sorry about your misfortune. The good ole days are over. T is not in the business of turning manual labor into a “career” job anymore. Get with the program or get out.

It’s hard to interact with upper level management when there are 9 levels between L 0 & CEO. Everyone knows how to use Webphone and lookup org hierarchy. A large % of outside forces have degrees too so quit being so condescending.

It’s just AT&T has become top down micromanaged and any critical, outside the box thinking is not encouraged. It’s became just a job & not a career anymore so everyone acts like a Stepford Wife. Just show up to work & do as you are told, sound familiar. Penny wise and Pound foolish.

No different than any other global company really. With so many employees, it’s doubtful a “ground level” employee would have many (if at all) interactions with executive level managers (L4+..i.e. AVP, VP, President, EVP, SVP,etc.). What would bother me though is for a “ground level” employee to not even know the name of his/her Area Manager and/or Director through sheer ignorance and laziness and not being able to use basic lookup and social networking tools (Webphone, tSpace, etc) on the Intranet.

Our Union s—s but management s—s way harder. Its nice that someone in management knows the actual names associated with the different levels, but at ground zero, all we know are 1st level, 2nd level , and 3rd level. Most of us have no idea who the 3rd level and up are because they hide and keep themselves unaccountable for their actions. Without the union these heartless uninvolved upper managers would pick us off from on high with their 2nd level / 1st level sniper rifle . Because after all there is no interaction between them and us workers.

This place would be great without unions. Incompetent and lazy workers would not be protected.

Unfortunately @1azn, when you have greedy, abusively managed organizations like AT&T, trade unions become a necessary evil. Imagine how bad this place would be with no union.

ATT is getting their butts kicked by Comcast in the internet space. ATT is getting out of the TV space in favor of OTT streaming. ATT is losing ground in the FTTB space to the Zayo’s of the world. ATT is churning wireless customers to Verizon and TMobile. Time Warner won’t turn a profit to make up the debt for years to come.

If craft and management think they will have job after all of the challenges ATT is facing right now, you are truly delusional. And not that smart. I’m starting to realize the low intellect is the reason craft has to work OT to break a 100k. There are kids coming out of college working for google making more than that and they don’t even work 40 hours. What a joke ATT is.

“ Show me level 2s and above with seniority who think they are entitled to their level and I'll show you a company on the brink of disaster”.
I really am lost as to what you were trying to say here. I promise you that management employees at AT&T don’t care in the least about seniority. That seniority nonsense is reserved for union losers who can’t/won’t figure out any other way. Do you even have any clue what you’re talking about when you say “The L2’s and up”??? Who exactly are you referring to at L2?.. Area Managers, Project/Program Managers, Network Support, Advanced Technical Support, Software Engineers, RAN Engineers, Agile RTE’s? And don’t forget, non-supervisory L2 management employees can be at different levels in the TCP hierarchy as well.

I am craft and I have always been wage group one. I always laugh when I see the "I made $180,000 ... I made $200,000 ... etc ..."

Wage group one techs would have to work ourselves into a coma to make $180,000 gross ... ... and yes ... I have worked a ton of overtime different recent years and made nowhere near that.

@1azn+14b58Uci Thanks for the history lesson on unions. I don't disagree with you but I was trying hard not to trash craft and instead focus on how friggin' inept and clueless management is. Show me level 2s and above with seniority who think they are entitled to their level and I'll show you a company on the brink of disaster.

OP, you should really get a clue. Your post is ridiculous to say the least and I’ll answer it with a response I found on a similar thread from a couple of days ago on this very forum.

Trade Unions are one of the most corrupt and useless businesses on the planet. They had some value of course at the turn into the 20th century and beyond WWII with safety and working conditions, but modern business practices and huge advancements in technology and automation pretty much made them obsolete beyond 2000. Less than 10% of the composite workforce in the US is union represented and I don’t ever see that moving vertical again. Unions never figured out how to align their business practices with those of the ever changing job and skill markets of their members. They simply continue to use the same archaic tactics that worked 100 years ago that are incredibly dated and ineffective today. They create an entitlement atmosphere for members based solely on seniority and without any really valuable skill set to match it and then run around telling everyone how important they are and how hard their members work and that you can’t survive without them.

Take any normal working class blue collar civilian off the streets and have them ride/sit with pretty much any union employee at AT&T for a couple of days and then show them how much that union employee makes and their benefits coverage. Ask them how bad the work, pay and benefits are after and they’ll laugh at you and ask “How and where do I sign up to get on that gravy train?”

“ Maybe 15-20%. The rest are fat and lazy, bragging about seniority and other things that require no skill. ”

And just like management to make up numbers without data to back them up lol.

The way I see it is like this - New managers are being moved into craft from non-craft positions . By this I mean 15 MST/I&R guys have a 1st level and a 2nd level that come from Dispatch . This is a non-functioning arrangement . The worker bees know their job and the desk bees know nothing but cones, door locks, windows and chock blocks !

I guess that means that you won’t qualify for the stimulus checks then since they top out at 150k for joint filing.

Maybe 15-20%. The rest are fat and lazy, bragging about seniority and other things that require no skill. While on topic, I detest the word "craft". Antiquated term for an antiquated way of doing business.

One has to remember many managers are promoted from hourly jobs to get them out of the field, many are hired right out of business college and have no clue about telephony, many take the job because they don’t want to do physical labor. And there you have it. That is why they can’t make a decision on their own!

Everybody thinks they’re smarter than the next guy. If you were really smart, you wouldn’t be working for such a c-ap company making what most people consider peanuts. Even with OT, most techs only make low 100s. That’s not that much when you think about it. If it was, you wouldn’t have to work for 30 years in order to retire. Yet the clueless VP that you work for can be surplused with only 20 years on the job and not worry because he made a boatload of money without having to know a darn thing. So with that said, who is really the dumb one.

Level ones are a box of rocks too. They only know what they've been programmed to know from above. The ability to independently think and reason for oneself is not a trait possessed by AT&T management, at any level.
