Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

1.5 billion in job cuts

Let’s talk about the areas that will get destroyed.

My guesses:
IT
Engineering
National Business

Here's how you get that $1.5B; layoff any management that creates, maintains, or uses a daily, weekly or monthly scorecard. Performance metrics will only be gathered once per quarter just like financial reports. ATT will be able to lay off thousands of people with techs and reps free to do their job without the insane pressures created by these worthless daily/weekly/monthly scorecards. Trust me - if you eliminate these reports there will be tens of thousands of managers with nothing left to do.

National business is fake news, rahshidinalaji can do your job in India so don’t worry they’re coming for you

They even said they were cutting IT on the video. Of course they are. I'm just not sure what they're going to do.

IT has already been decimated to the bare bone via outsourced or FMP'd not much more fat to cut there.

I was going to say, how did you include National Business in your doomsday plan OP? It’s one of the few organizations with sustained growth and positive margins in the last 5 years running and continues to comparatively outpace everything but wireless and fiber broadband.

I think they will finally cut from the top... this time they NEED TO. THEY got a good 5 layers of USELESS upper management collecting a check, that does nothing besides hold a title... that would DEFINITELY cover the 1.5 billion. To prove that this new mgt team is as smart or different as they claim, we will see how this goes in June (whether we want to or not)

@1cys- yes, and rebadging makes more economical sense for T, since they won’t pay out severance and they’ll still reap the rewards of the “knowledge transfer”. Count on T to take the low road to look good on the balance sheet short term.

I think where it makes sense, for example IT, you will see as much or more of people (and possibly the apps and services) being rebadged versus cut. I don’t see how they can cut the required amount of people to meet the 1.5B (this includes salary, benefits, 401k match and the like) by year end without impacting service.

On another note, the 1.5B is not new. I think it was initially mentioned last year. However, I do recall when it was mentioned previously there were one, maybe two other items included in that number, maybe operational efficiencies or some other nonsense jargon they toss around. The big change is now the 1.5B is strictly employee costs.

Recurring costs so 15K could be right.

As others mentioned , the axe will cut hard through any supporting parts of the organization. If your job doesn't directly bring in money and or isnt mandatory for some compliance reason.. it's at risk..

Here's the reality unemployment rate is at 14% and will go over 20% all corporations are going to shed folks, many will simply not have the work to support the staff, plus the government is giving unemployment support so now is the time.

@1iqq You are spot on, the numbers will be greater than 15,000 to achieve 1.5B in 2020!!

@1mmw, "So if the average employee getting cut costs $100K then 15,000 need to get cut."

Probably more if they want to hit $1.5b in savings. We're halfway thru the year already. They would only realize half of the labor rate savings for everyone laid off in June. You only get 25% of the savings for everyone laid off by end of 3rd quarter.
