Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Not likely , old legacy companies like T have lots of stodgy old-timers and GenX that demand face /office time because that's how their workplace was. Maybe in 20+ years when a few progressive Millennials are in charge will things change.. A lot has to do with the world that surrounds us.

Hey my team is all working in the office and collaborating, sure that is an easy claim for certain VP who can command their people to come into offices as a mandate. This is a lazy and draconian management approach while claiming people will work more efficiently and quickly because they went into offices. Where is the metrics and empirical dollar and time savings on that? Sounds like a perfect candidate for a six sigma project (sarcasm). As Morrow pointed, T has high cost structure, apparently forcing people to offices hasn't work.

You don't need to be techie, but look at the Linux Kernal Project, massive distribution development across the world, with tools the Git for management. Any developer can improve existing code or write new submission. Fast release cycles and Linux is used everywhere. Most the people working on Linux kernel will never ever meet in an office. T will never be an open source project, but it can certainly take some pointers from the tux crew. All the silos, levels of managements, bureaucracy, and self-serving masters are driving up the cost. Forget open work environment (while pictures do look nice on annual report and other propaganda), it is all about open meritocracy and build infrastructure to enable smart people to implement wining ideas.

Makes too much sense so I doubt they do it. Have to collaborate so you can skype the person next to you.

I hope so. I’d be even more happy to just keep WFH. Because I can’t imagine them investing that much into revamping these open workspaces, that they just put in, in most locations, or to trust that everyone follows the new protocols. I hope they do let most of the leases go, in lieu of people, and just let us WFH.
