Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What’s going on with managers

I keep hearing that some large changes are coming to managers 1rst level up. A restructuring of some sort and layoffs? Are these rumors or is there something going on?

My 2nd level has 5 support staff under him none of them have direct reports. Do those count toward the 25?

@1pcw- not to mention the “new” version of outlook which freezes multiple times per day, sometimes I don’t even realize until I wonder why I haven’t gotten any email in 2 hours. Force quit and restart. How can anyone get work done.

Word is management will be restructured on the first 3 levels to have a minimum of 25 reports. So first level will have 25 techs, second level will have 25 firsts and so on. Any department that can’t meet that minimum will most likely be merged or in some cases eliminated. If you manage no subordinates be ready to be cut.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door–that way Lumberg can’t see me, heh–after that I sorta space out for an hour.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I’d say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s that I just don’t care.

How can we do more from our computers ? I spend all day putting in my user and passwords then watching it spin in circles for eternity, then it asks me are you sure you want to proceed ? Or, is this really you? or your about to enter a blah blah blah. Then I lose the connection and start all over !

Just remember to file your TPS reports on time. Now if you are a 2nd line that drives around looking to pop front line workers for not having enough cones out, or not having their visor down, trust me, Bill has looked at your salary and his team has figured out the cost of keeping you around.

Tell the Bob’s (Bill) I’d say in any given day I really only do about 15 minutes worth of work and that if you do more sales you don’t see a dime of that. He will immediately make you a manager and fire Lumberg. Stay away from Milton.

@cuw+14ABWuD4 Did you not hear Bill Morrow state that this company is very "top heavy"? You might have also missed where Jeff said "We have to flatten the org". Jeff then goes on the state how many levels of management are between the front level employees and himself, I believe that number was nine. I do totally agree with your comparison with Office Space. Bill to John; "So ahhhh.....What would you say...you do here?"

Managers will not be employed soon. Find other work if you can, we will let you in the union as long you pay dues and quit brown nosing.

"2020 to the new 2025 transformation plan"

Kind of reminds me of the old Soviet five year plans. They only worked in the inventor's imagination because everyone lied to the leader. When the five years was up, a new leader would come up with a new plan - and the old leader was put in front of a firing squad.

"All I can say is I would not want to be in a management position right now with this company. The remainder of this year is going to be a bumpy ride. If you are a union employee get ready to do more and more from your computer."

Haha!! Union employees are fair game as well my friend. The hired gun (politically correct version = management consultant - Bill Morrow) spoke at great length and in considerable detail during the "Transforming our Business" video chat that came from Stankey's office a few days ago. It was a 3-way with him, Jeff McElfresh and Bill Morrow explaining the current state of the business along with target improvement areas and increased competitive pressures. I have no doubt this is directly related to the letter that Elliot Management sent the AT&T board back in October of last year. He outlined 10 areas in need of immediate improvement/transformation in order of priority as listed below:

  1. Field Operations
  2. Last Mile Provisioning
  3. Network Power
  4. Core & NOC
  5. IT
  6. Call Center Efficiency
  7. Consumer Retail Distribution
  8. B2B Sales
  9. Advertising Media Spend
  10. Credit, Collection & Billing

He also identified that AT&T is not a leader (putting it gently) in consumer NPS and customer share and that T absolutely has the highest cost structure among it's competitors. I'm not surprised at all to see Field Operations at the top of the list as that is where the bulk of the organized labor workforce exists. He also advised that T is very "top" heavy in the management/executive arena and that we have far to many unnecessarily complex systems and processes in place (Both legacy and NG). Most of this was detailed in the Elliot letter and is not "new" news. The next few years will be very interesting to say the least as we shift away from 2020 to the new 2025 transformation plan. The first 20 or so minutes of the video chat appeared to be prepared, but not entirely scripted. After that, it was clear they were all following one. That being said, you can't hide emotion all the time and it was clear in some of his early answers that Bill was a little disenchanted with our current situation. I felt like I was in the movie Office Space while I was watching the video. So ahhhh.....What would you say...you do here?
