Is anybody else worried that AT&T might use the whole coronavirus situation to lay off a bunch of employees without providing any kind of severance? It seems like a perfect opportunity for something like that, and I really wouldn't put it past this management to do something like that.

They'll pay severance but the terms may change as their financial conditions worsen. COVID-19 will most likely just fast forward what was inevitable for AT&T. They'll be broken up again into smaller companies.
One of the things you give up when you accept severance is the right to sue your officer or vp personally. So no they are not likely to end severance.
Why do they offer severance when not legally obligated to? To extinguish legal claims. That's all.

You do understand that there is no legal requirement whatsoever for a corporation to provide any severance, don't you?

The corporation can change the terms of, or entirely cease the severance plans altogether any time they wish to. Go to HR Onestop and read the plans. This is on like page 1.

why pay severance wgen AT&T can legally Trade full-time employees for contractors in a practice under no scrutiny, especially within the context of the H-1B visa program, which critics suggest is being used by companies across the country to import cheaper labor, yet perfectly legal. Is tbis what MAGA is all about?

They would only do this is they really wanted to get sued by every man, woman and child, costing them far more than giving the legally obligated severance, so no,they would not do what you suggest.
No change in Ratty and Stinky's plan. If they want to whack you without any severance, they will just send you to Tech Mahindra, Accenture, IBM, or whatever. No severance, and then they whack you on T's behalf.
But I agree that Ratty will come up with some scheme to grab the Fed bailout $ and give himself another 30% raise before he pulls his golden parachute.
