I see it the other way around. If the pay and benefits are great (Unless you are a prem tech or in retail) and people are still upset all the time. That speaks to something horribly wrong in the culture of this company.
It's funny people complain how terrible it is but say they stay because of the great pay, great benefits but don't do a lot of work and nobody else wants to hire them at the same salary because they are being over paid. So what you are saying is if all the non-working blood s—ing leaches left the company could hire people who would work making a better experience for our customers and improving our bottom line. Well that would be nice...
Because they pay well, unless you’re a Prem Tech.
Six figure salary, just under seven weeks vacation, health care for the family, nice 401K match plus a vested pension and I enjoy the people I work with.
The people staying and complaining really aren't very good workers and would have a difficult time getting a job elsewhere. Even with a low unemployment rate.
I'm over 50 and met MR75. Not leaving at this moment. The pay is excellent as well as the benefits. I will retire early if they offer me a VSP. If not, then I'll retire after April 2021 on my own. That's when the new contract comes out and I'll get 4 years insurance. Either way, can't wait.
I love my closet office outside Chicago, no local management and not having to do anything all day but arrange stickie notes on the wall. It’s very choice 😎
I left with over 17 years, on my own, and I am over 50. I had job offers before I started submitting a resume, and I am happy as h#!!
My motivation for staying is primarily money. Would be difficult to match my salary outside the company. Lower salary also means that much less I can afford to contribute to my 401(k) - and that much less I receive via the company match. No pension outside of AT&T as well. So lots of money left on the table should I leave. That said however, I have actively started looking for something outside the company. AT&T is simply no longer a viable place to work. Never-ending layoffs that are just ramping up. Management that takes its direction from an outside agitator with an axe to grind (Elliot Management). Drowning the company with debt. Blindly pursuing a pipe dream of being “a modern media company”. I’m done. But as I’m over 50, wish me luck. And even if I do land something comparable to my current job, I’m going in with two targets on my back should there be even the smallest of layoffs - age plus “last in first” out. Of course there are exceptions to the 50+ “rule”, but they’re exactly that - exceptions.
Most folks who have been round a while make good bank. I think many would leave if they could get the same or more coin. Everyone is not IT or technician and many of our skillsets are not transferable to other industries. I stayed for the pay and benefits but they finally hit me last year. I knew I was overpaid and luckily I was prepared. I only miss the paycheck and a handful of good friends I made over 24 years.
According to Forbes, just today, ATT is one of best places to work! WTF?!?!?!?!

I'm here because I really can't find a job that pay as well given the skills I have.
I’m here for the 6th and the 21st, but there does come a time when the bad outweighs the good. As long as I’m planning and preparing, I’m just fine.
The only reason I stay is to accrue for years of service for my pension. There is absolutely no reason to stay here if you were hired after the various pension plans stopped being offered.
I am over 50 and got three offers on my first three resumes sent. It is your skills and I kept mine up outside of att. Att is where skills go to die. So now I am in a better job, better retirement and yes better than the pension, and I haven’t heard the word lay-off or outsource or surplus since I left att. Just lucky I guess and att is cesspool that wreaks of death.
I'm 50 and have been here 25 years. I have a ton of PTO and a very good salary, and the job is not terribly difficult. I can handle the toxic environment until I am asked to leave.
Biding my time to retirement. I did not want to retire this year, but with age, years, and mr75, looks like I am. I want to be surplus, now, this year, not MVO but that would be second best, and not outsourced/rebadged. And when I retire, I will not work for the comp or other company doing what I do today, there is too much ageism and discrimination, so I'll volunteer and teach (obviously not for the money). I have had a love hate relationship with AT&T, more on the hate than the love. I have mostly enjoyed the work I've done over the years. Had mostly garbage for managers, with only a few being ok at best, out of about 35 managers. I've grown to despise the upper level managers, and really do not want to be under the rule of John Stankey, namely directly due to his hatred toward IT, and his systematic dismantling and destruction thereof.
Why do I stay? Well, let me see. When you’re over 50, and are within a couple of years of retirement, you’re going to do what you can to survive because the job market is not favorable to you when your age is over 50, your previous pay rate is too high and you have a degree. Trust me, previous surpluses have already put me in a position to test the job market and what I found was not good. Companies don’t want to pay, don’t want to offer you benefits and don’t care for your experience. The way they see it, they feel you will demand too much money, will not be with the company long enough or, because of your degree or experience, will only last long enough until you find a better job. Thus, they avoid you, but don’t want to tell you that for fear of a lawsuit.
If you are over 50, or maybe even close, forget about finding another job in the programming field. Only jobs for older worker are being Sprawlmart greeters. This has been the experience of all my colleagues that got whacked. You skills might get you the initial interview, but once the see your age you are done.
Companies want kids fresh out of college - preferably Mumbai U. A few people that did get interviews said that the interviewer's face visibly changed once they figured out the age, and the interview abruptly ended and they never heard back from the company again.
I think this is a good question and I'd be interested and learning the same.
For me, I don't really enjoy my job and feel there is no support at all from the many layers of management. The company line about doing things better and inviting ideas to improve are just that – company lines. Morale has been at an all time low for 3-4 years and it's not getting any better. We're always being told what difficult times the company faces, yet the execs make record salaries while the average worker gets screwed. Pay attention to any town hall and within the first few minutes of the opening you will hear something said about how bad things are and we're in for a rough year (this, during the best economic cycle in decades). After a while you realize you can't do anything about it and give up trying. The average employee gets no respect from upper management. The economy is good, just not for the average worker at att
Why do I stay? I can retire in 3 years if I can dodge the surplusses.
Hmm, I actually enjoy my job. While the surpluses and “reduction exercises” sometimes take a toll, I still like what I do. I still have a pension and discounts that add a good bit of value to my package so leaving for somewhere else to make the same doesn’t excite me. That’s just my personal take.
