Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

major shareholder demands ceo move to san francisco

Charles Munger, whose Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and Daily Journal Corp. are shareholders in Wells Fargo & Co., isn’t a fan of the work arrangement set up by the bank’s new chief executive officer.

“That’s outrageous,” Munger, 96, said Wednesday in an interview when asked about Charlie Scharf’s choice to live in New York while running the San Francisco-based lender. “Anybody should move for a big job like that.”

The bank named Scharf as CEO in September after a six-month search and agreed to let him remain back east. In addition to running one of the biggest U.S. lenders, Scharf is pushing to help the firm emerge from three years of scandals and regulatory punishments.

Scharf, the former CEO of Bank of New York Mellon Corp. and Visa Inc., defended his work location in September, saying that he’s accustomed to spending “very little time” in the office while doing his job. “I don’t think anyone would ever say in the places I’ve worked that I’ve not been present,” he said. “It’s just the opposite.” A Wells Fargo spokesman declined to comment on Wednesday.

Scharf won the Wells Fargo job after two previous CEOs were felled by consumer scandals that have dogged the bank since late 2016. The company has paid billions of dollars in fines and legal costs and is under a Federal Reserve order limiting its growth.

Munger, chairman of publisher Daily Journal, said he was dismayed that previous Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan was forced to step down amid criticism last year.

“He was not responsible for the mistakes that were made,” Munger said following Daily Journal’s annual meeting in Los Angeles.

Munger, a California resident, is a vice chairman at Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire. The conglomerate run by Warren Buffett is the largest shareholder in Wells Fargo, with a stake valued at about $18 billion. Daily Journal also owns shares in the lender.

I feel so bad for all of you. Look up the word hypocrite in the dictionary..Chuckle's picture is found right next to it. I wonder how long it will take for him to totally and utterly completely destroy whatever is left of WF? Good luck. You are all going to need it.

I can't believe this man who was so against working from home at BNYM is not even physically where he should be?! Gee ironic much?! Seems the guillotine torch has been passed from BNYM to WF - not that BNYM iisn't having their own woes esp after the mess Scharf left behind but glad he is gone. He is a giant bag of contradictions and will continue to bounce around to anywhere that will take him. I really feel for all of you!

Does no one remember Shrewsbury in the SF town hall last year stating they were no longer hiring in CA and NY because they were expensive. That WF HQ would of course remain in San Fran but wouldn't grow. Did I dream this? Shortly thereafter they added Portland Seattle and NY as approved hubs. Besides, everyone knows Wachovia is east coast and that is what WF is now. You can blame Courtney for the layoffs she is the one that came in with all her mass years of experience paid for by her daddy crying her directs were spread too far out. No one questioned why her location became a hub.

"He didn’t believe you could “ collaborate “ unless it was in person. So.... we would come into the office in pgh to have conference calls with India and/or the UK. " that's exactly what is already happening here!

@xha+13ur01uX actually if you check this board and Blind, they say telecommuting is just fine now, after they put the brakes on it, and Charlie left. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bony-mellon-work-from-home/bny-mellon-puts-brakes-on-changes-in-work-from-home-rules-for-staff-idUSKCN1QO22V

CEO is a scam artist enforcing relocations and k–ling remote work while he is living in NYC and probably working from home himself!

He is hiring east coast execs who are his friends to run the divisions so to justifying living in NYC

I think he will be fired this year in 2020 just watch.

Well War Munger is 96. He is an investor in Wells , not a part of management. I cannot imagine Munger having a direct say on where the CEO lives. Charlie May or may not be great but then he has not done anything stupid to be fired . Lack of brilliance is not a requirement for a Wells ceo job

Yesterday they gave notice to 680 employees in all 50 states that they had to relocate or get another job.

Good example being set at the top.

Good luck with Charlie. He k–led work from home in his short tenure at BNYM. He loved below expectation ratings and giving people the boot
The laughable thing is when he went to WFC he decided to stay east. Must love the condo he bought here

make CEO move, or else, we dump all WFC shares we hold.
That will be enough to get the top guy to move to SF.

Meanwhile during his short tenure at BNYM this clown tried to Eliminate work from home completely and it was only until lawsuits in the UK were filed that he had to tuck tail between his legs and reverse course.
The guy is like a toddler throws tantrums.

He made his direct reports a week in advance give him each of their schedules so he knew we were they were at all times. He didn’t believe you could “ collaborate “ unless it was in person. So.... we would come into the office in pgh to have conference calls with India and/or the UK.

IT BLOWS my mind that he keeps getting jobs paying him what they pay him to do nothing but cut jobs while he takes his bloated payments.

I’m Just glad he is out of the BNYM -although he sent us on a path that seems to not gonna be righted and I hope Karma catches up to him.

No. He stays in NYC for “family reasons”. He lived there when he was at Visa. Read between the lines.

CEO isn't committed to relocating because if he fails he doesn't have to flee back to New York. He knows it's a huge task to turn the company around.
