Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

A message for Randy

  • Stop treating my employees as expenses, and more like assets.
  • Eliminate the “entertainment” portion of the company.
  • Build the pipes that deliver the entertainment, air interface and fiber.
  • Stop saying everything will be a cloud based environment and you will not be in the equipment business after 2020. Randy the cloud doesn’t mean it actually works in the white fluffy things in the sky. You will still need to run server farms... that means equipment, it is a necessary expense.

Assets = Sycophants, nepotism and friends. All else are expendable.

In twenty years when at&t no longer exists as a Fortune 100 company. Someone will cull together all of these posts over the last decade and publish a large book on how Randall Stephens and the Board destroyed the company through their ineptness.

True, we are told, top down, micromanaged people. I’ve given up, tired of fighting upstream now I’m just mediocre because that’s what they want. Everyone used to be encouraged to use critical thinking and contribute from the bottom up.

Now it’s just lip service from upper management. Action speaks louder than town halls, e-mails, employee surveys etc... I’ve passed along some easy fixes for some process improvements in the employee suggestion site. Only to be passed around from staff to staff manager because no will take ownership. The buck doesn’t stop here, it only becomes like a beach ball at a concert. I’ve then been told, “I don’t handle this, you’ll have to refer it to the correct person/dept” but no direction or info. whom to contact. So much for staff help, too busy having useless chats & meetings with each other and not serving their customers or correcting issues.

I agree, there are only 9 levels of managers maybe 10 by the time I finish this post between Randy & I. That’s a direct line and doesn’t include all of their reports that have do nothing jobs & titles. Several years ago it was only 5-6 & most of them worked their way up thru the ranks

Most of my managers now are clueless about the business & the company is rotating them so much between orgs that it’s getting worse. They only manage by numbers & wont take advise or suggestions from people that have been doing the job for 21-40 years.

FYI,

Everyone is an employee including Randy. He and the thousands of c-suite are the biggest expense so, logic dictates where to cut first for most impact to bottom line.
