For the younger guys LEAVE!! AT&T is a career dead end

I am seeing a lot of people 5 years in with the company desperately trying to leave or got surplus and can't find a job. You are not learning anything worthwhile!!!

The key is to look at what you are doing now. If you are doing anything you can't take to another company or that opens up your option, it's time to leave now. No offense to the ATT veteran but if you are doing a job someone with 40 or 30 years of service is doing, you are missing out on learning skillsets that are currently on demand.

You should be doing Cyber Security, Actual Networking (network troubleshooting, heavy linux, configuring routers), cloud networking, or anything involving big data(Tableau). Better yet take those development courses incorporate them into your resume. Also get certifications.

In other for me to switch careers from this archaic garbage, I went home everyday and self learned until I found myself in an demand position. Even now I keep the same mentality of always training for my next job. It was depressing as hell seeing peers get promotion at other companies while I was on my butt depressed waiting to be culled.

The old guys are the ones that should leave. They are dragging the company down. The young guys bring the new skills for the new world. Old guys hang out and complain.

And I'm doing soooo well that I can't let go of AT&T, and post here every day, going whaaaa.

Remember, new employees, there are 250,000 people working at AT&T and 500,000 retirees, the size of a medium city. And there are about 10 people posting here incessantly, on how they didn't fit in. Any 750,000 population will have 10, and probably a bit more misfits.

Just stay away from wireline, and you'll do fine.

I retired from AT&T and I have never told my daughter she should work at AT&T when she gets out of college. I'm 3rd generation phone company on both sides of my family but I dont want her here. I feel very thankful for my career but the company has changed so much. I think they need a real CEO that understands real technology. Stankey running TW is also a joke. Just my opinoon.

I'm what some would call an old-timer, and I have, and have always had the latest cutting-edge skills. Over 20 years with the Death Star, late 50's, and can sing and dance all around the youngsters locked into their cell phones and online forums that cheated their way through college. None, not one, knows how to do anything, as it's all done for them by people like me, that person they c-ap on. Just wait till they surplus me, and the rest. Who will do their work for these ‘leaders’ that have never been technically challenged, who have never in a day gotten their hands dirty? Answer: Accenture, IBM, Microsoft, and Amdocs.

Great advice and throw some cloud technology in the list but if you know Linux well that is the cloud. But you could also add some VMware like pks, some kubernetes, and containers like dockers. Att is a dead end going backwards.

Good advice

Ive been with the company almost two years now and I can’t agree more. I come into work here and use old and irrelevant technologies and it feels like it’s not until I get home and do my own coding that work actually begins. Planning on leaving in the coming months and I recommend any other newer hire do the same
