Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Spans and layers

What’s going on with spans and layers? My manager just tried to promote one of his pets to a manager role. The other two managers who report to him don’t even have enough work to do and he wants to add another manager with an imaginary job description. Dysfunctional and inefficient. Guess what department? You guessed it compliance.

Spans and Layers, a Charles Scarf Production. Wells and BNY Mellon are now brothers in arms. Todd Gibbons of BNY is basically Charles 2.0, continuing the same agenda there.

During the last review, each manager needed at least 8 direct reports. 10 was ideal. The other big challenge was managers overseeing consultants... they didn’t count in the number. But based in the 8 direct reports/manager, the bank was looking to cut nearly half of its middle managers.

Just empty this place as a former employee they have given me and others PTSD and wrecked our lives, both execs and even the low level employees were dirty and low down. Nothing to save here.

In speaking with a senior executive last week, they still don’t have their budget for 2020.

Scharfie reduces layers in middle management but adds more (expensive) personal echo chamber layers at the top. He doesn’t seem to consider Sr Mgt debating society layers to be layers. Missing some basic cost savings arithmetic...

Way to many management roles...they are doing so little on our team...counting their fat bonuses already, while they take long lunches and are unavailable to staff all the time.

I heard Scharf is a fan of span of control of at least 9. Please let him be able to see that management is where cuts need to occur. Those layers have rarely been touched at WF and we hope he'll continue what he's already started by cutting the complacent, useless managers.

In every area there are people tripping over each other and their phony jobs. I know because my role is one where I have assignments in any line of business. There are managers setting up strange rules that prevent work from being completed which they then go on a rampage about - they cannot get out of their own way because they are just too stupid.

If Scharf doesn't take an ax to at least 40% of management roles, he will not make any progress on anything. Hopefully, there is already a plan to do that. Good luck to him, it'll take a miracle.
