Will I Still Receive Annual Bonus Payout If I Resign Prior to Bonus Payday?

Getting close to reeling in a new job offer. If I take it and put in my two weeks my last day @ AT&T would likely be mid-Feb, prior to annual bonus payout. Will AT&T honor the bonus or do I need to try to massage the start date at my new job to ensure I receive bonus for my work @ AT&T last year?

I can see this question/post is kind of old, but I wanted to share my experience and hope it helps someone. I actually resigned from AT&T in November 2020, and at the time HR did tell me I would receive a bonus payout for that performance year, but it would be paid at the time when bonuses were paid to the rest of the department. It also stated this in the exit paperwork, I can't remember the exact title, but it was framed as a "checklist for leaving AT&T". Well, at the time of the bonus payout, I received... 0 lol. Contacting HR and my former department/BU resulting in receiving this policy: "Eligible employees must be active on the AT&T payroll as of December 31 of the performance year".

If you are leaving/resigning and receive a different response, get that in writing and SAVE that document/form for reference, do not be stupid like me. Hopefully, this helps someone that has this same question.

If you were there 6mos or less it is up to the Management....A woman left for an extended maternity end of May a few years ago and big discussion is if she should get the EOY bonus or not during performance discussions a few yrs back.....

Hmmm... it depends on how you leave. The policy for management used to say you had to be on payroll 12/31 to receive bonus check the following March. I believe this would apply to employees who simply quit (not MVO). This is why employees wait until Jan 1st before quitting. If for example you quit on 2/28, you’d be entitled to bonus payout in March, but you would NOT get anything for Jan & Feb.

Under Voluntary Management Offer (MVO) the rules may be different. If you accept MVO offer it would likely include prorated bonus for months number of worked in the current year.

Why do people respond when they don’t know?

If you quit today, you will receive your full 2019 bonus, plus a prorated bonus for January.

"Okay, everyone is saying this person would get a bonus because of being on payroll for 2019. Does that mean since they’ve worked a 1.5 months they’ll get a bonus for 2020 also or do they have to work the full year to be eligible"?

As someone mentioned below, anything less than the full year would also entitle that person to be paid, but it would be pro-rated based on whatever the amount of time is (so in your example of 1.5 months it would not be very much at all).

"If you resign before the payout you will not receive a bonus".

Completely inaccurate. If you were on the payroll in 2019 you're entitled to and will receive the bonus.

As long as you were on payroll for any period during the previous year, you would receive the payout. If you are on payroll until 12/31 you would receive the full amount. If you leave prior to 12/31 of the previous year you would receive a prorated amount based on how long you worked through the previous year.

If you resign before the payout you will not receive a bonus.

Unless you are surplussed you need to be on payroll when the bonus is paid out. You can confirm by looking on the Itranet.
