Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Transfer to IP

All.. trying to weigh the options here. Our work group (legacy DirecTV techs) has been offered to completely switch to the IP side (not a training and loan, a training and be permanently moved). The downside is, home disbatch is taken away until criteria is met which is fine but being 65 mile away from the garage I would probably be relocated to.. will I ever be able to home disbatch? There’s also the concern that this is the only POSSIBLE future of the company and they are giving us a chance to switch before they really start to get down to very little or no DirecTV techs. I know the thought it they are trying to get rid of all technicians but would this delay it?

Out here in California the dtv techs have already been trained on IP work and doing fiber installs and some copper. Almost that whole Dtv garage is fully trained on IP. They even have Dtv guys who are trained on IP to train the Dtv guys who just got out of IP class.

I had to work over a hour away and that was the transfer. I was not allowed to take relocation assistance so I was stuck driving that everyday.

Go to another company. Try to get in to mobility. Start your own business. This one is decaying and treat their employees like cr*p. DTV is dying.

IP tech, dtv tech. Doesn’t matter. They should all be job searching now. The job market is good everyone. It’s not a if, but rather a when with these job titles. Good luck in whatever decision you choose.

Dude, don’t make your decision based on home dispatch ! Make it on job security ! I think it’s a no brainer. Satellite is already dead. There’s no future there for you. Next month the company is rolling out its Directv replacement , att tv and they are actively trying to move satellite customers to it. At least with IP, you have a chance of keeping a job. Everyone needs internet and not everyone can get Comcast.

I guess it depends on how it currently works for you. Are DTv techs currently protected by seniority and will that seniority be protected over at IP ? The question is really about where you’d have more job protection as they are laying off both groups. Personally , I’d make the switch to IP just because both satellite tv and u-verse tv are dying but folks will always need /want internet.

Honestly I think it will never happen. I have never heard of Direct Tv Technician coming over to the IP Side. To be honest I don't really think CWA or IBEW care to much about the Direct Tv side.

Unless you get moved into a yard where you have more seniority. All layoffs on prem techs are done by yard and seniority. Seniority is King.

It will not be a permanent stay. I am a IP Legacy Prem Tech. They are already telling us they are going to cut head count on our side. They don't need all these Wire/ Prem tech's to just install Internet and phone services. All they are doing is giving you a extra couple months. Knowing how things work on our side. Once and if you guy's come over to our side. You will be the first one's to be cut again.

Not been trained yet but we had several guys get “cross trained” but still under DirecTV work group. This would be assuming new management team and completely going uverse world.

Have you been trained in IP work yet? Legacy DTV tech here in SE and was trained to do IP work over a year ago and have yet to climb a single pole or do a Uverse/ Fiber install. Still performing DTV installs and home dispatch.

Being 65 miles away they are unlikely to allow home dispatch. Home dispatch rules for legacy ATT techs is 35 miles from work center or “turf” depending on how your manager calculates it. A waiver can be given for further distances but from what I see they don’t usually give waivers for more than a few extra miles past 35.
