Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Hey it's their money. Unless you have a job offer waiting, just follow the instructions and collect your money. Its one extra check you would not have gotten if it was BAU. I believe they are delaying the separation date because its stated in the release that they might have to call you back if your skills are needed.

so employees that got surplus notices and have stopped caring are now to stay on until further notice? What could possibly go wrong with that?

ATT craft work force at least in district 3/SE is mostly old of retirement age workers.
COVID virus has a much higher mortality rate for older persons. They may need those surplused workers if a lot of older persons get sick and die. They may be waiting to see what happens. It is an unknown what effect it will have on the business or the older employees. Is that giving to much credit to human resources. In sense it is similar to not doing the same if you new that a hurricane was approaching or you needed to clean up after one.

Question regarding this pause. If we agree to go ahead and leave on last day on payroll, are we ineligible for unemployment? Is that why ATT is doing this sudden turn?

What about re-badged employees ? The rebadged employees without severance end of last year. IBM/TechM/Accenture are not going to keep them around are they now ?

Don't forget, the company is on the hook for unemployment. If those terms are increased, they have to pay. There's your as to WHY. They only do this for their own benefit, not because it's morally correct.

Yep, always a reason why ATT does this type of shyte. and I'm sure they will take advantage of even more employees. They're getting a benefit for not laying you off... This company really has no morals.

When Pelosi announced the agreement, she said the legislation includes:

Free coronavirus testing for all who need it, including those without insurance

Up to two weeks of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid family and medical leave
Stronger unemployment insurance for furloughed workers

Buttressing SNAP and other food programs for school children and seniors

More money for Medicaid, the joint federal and state insurance program for low-income Americans

AT&T cares about its workers. Just too many complainers to make happy.

Maybe it’s related to the payroll tax cut Trump has been pushing the past few days. Probably lowers the taxes to keep people on a little longer.

If you have another job offer tske it and take the severance from at&t. I'm sure you were forced to sign a 60 day agreement known as a warn notice.

They probably get federal compensation dollars for the corona virus based on the number of people on payroll. They would only do this if they had something to gain (money, PR reasons, etc). Like others said, I would only stay if you haven't found a new job yet and take this as extra time to find one. You're just being used for their gain and when things turn around they'll still let you go.

My question is, WHY would they postpone the layoffs this? Financial reasons? Bad PR? Government pressure? Any ideas anyone?

Yes, I just got an email that said they are "suspending all current surplus activity immediately" and that the "timeline has been paused until further notice" and that we will "receive more information and guidance from your supervisor in the following weeks."

Not sure how long this "pause" is for.

I haven't yet spoken with my manager since the note arrived so late this afternoon. I am not certain what this means but I am ready to leave next week as planned.
