Band 7 doing Band 6 work

Anyone one else find yourself in a Band 7 role doing Band 6 work? What options are there - go to HR and request a review? And when the director keeps pushing for more Band 6 work - is it possible to say no? HQ Ops

I am band 8 and I have the responsibilities of a manager. This happened after one of the managers took the VSP. It bothers me that I don’t get paid more, but it’s the low end salary that is still keeping me on the job. I have a feeling if I get paid more, that would make me susceptible to layoffs. I am going to try to either find another job or move to another line of business that is not IT and get what deserve.

I suspect the OP has a hidden agenda in that silly post, that of provocateur. Yet the rank and file didn't fall for it.

Nice try troll.

Your position will not be upgraded. Apply for band 6 and make your move. Personally my move from 7 to 6 showed there can be a wide gap in expectations. I’ve been pushed far more than I ever was in band 7.

Just join the union and enjoy doing no work at all.

The fact of the matter is there will be times where 6's do the work of 7's and vice versa. Maybe you are being taken advantage of. Without knowing your situation, given more advanced work may also be taken as a good sign, such as being trusted to do good work and to help you grow professionally. Having the mindset that 'I'm a 7, I should only be doing a 7's work' is a good way to get RIF'd in my opinion. Take it as a positive and run with it.

Major caveat: @rcy is 99% right, it is extremely rare to move from a 7 to a 6 under the same manager, mainly because of HR rigor. Use your experience gained from doing higher level work and go after a 6 position under someone else. This happens way, way more frequently than an internal promotion.

Going to H R isn't going to help you at all. There is no such thing as "Band 6 work" as it's either a senior manager and Verizon has decided no work product is necessary, or you're an individual contributor who has the same skills or job as a 7T/7V.

Find another position. Do no buy into they will upgrade you to a 6 as it never happens.
