Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Email from Communications CEO "Setting the Record Straight"

Subject: Setting the Record Straight

Last night, Fox News aired an inaccurate and grossly misleading story about some work we have shifted to vendors. I suspect the story upset you as much as it did me. That's why I want to set the record straight on what we've done and how we've treated our employees.

  • The story talked about us moving some management billing functions to Accenture. The facts are – none of our U.S. employees are moving to Accenture's payroll and all have been offered other jobs within AT&T. If they don't accept the job offered to them and they are not able to find another job within AT&T by early next year, we will still pay them their full severance benefits.
  • The story also talked about tech companies bringing workers to the U.S. under the H-1B visa program. But it fails to mention that no H-1B workers will be used for teh billing functions we're shifting to Accenture.
  • There are other recent deals where we have shifted work and employees to companies like IBM or other vendors. In these cases, our employees are guaranteed a job with their new employer. At the same time, other companies are shifting work to us. So, it goes both ways.

I hope these facts provide you with the perspective that you didn't get from the Fox News report.

We thank you for your cooperation and encourage you to reach out to your HR support with any questions or feedback.

Thanks for everything you do.

CEO, AT&T Communications.

I don't understand how people aren't madder about this than they are.

The IBM rebadges are going to be forced to train their offshore replacements I'd bet that training plans are already being worked on. I'd also bet that no less than 300 (~30%) of those that came over will be let go at the end of their year and many of them have no clue but won't be shocked if it's closer to 50%. IBM is probably training them right now on how to search for internal positions at IBM without telling them why if what my friend rants about is true.

I'm glad I'll be turning in my notice to AT&T before the end of summer, unless I get lucky with the MVO lottery and leave sooner.

IBM rebadges were given offer letters for 1 year, "regular employee with predefined termination date" is what the end of the 1 year period was referred to.

Soon, we are told we will be informed if we will receive an extension to stay, need to find something else in the professional marketplace (internal job postings) and begin training our off-shore replacements. If you find nothing internally you're gone on 8/31/2020.

Since the salary range for the jobs taken over are substantially lower than the prior AT&T salaries that were maintained for 1 year, so an offer to stay with IBM will be at below market pay, with no pension, lower 401k matching that is paid only once a year and only if you're an active employee on that date, effectively no bonus, and substantially higher healthcare costs for non-single employees.

AT&T isn't surplussing or rebadging anyone! We are actually hiring, there are thousands of open positions we can't fill. We have people pounding on our doors to work here, we have to turn them away so many want to work here. They are not H1Bs, they are all Americans. These rumors about surplussing and rebadging never happened, completely unbased lies and not true.

Finance Billing Operations (FBO) is responsible for all billing functions. Over 3000 employees in this group were notified their jobs will transfer to Accenture. Many have already left others get the slow death and have to train replacements. It is true that some very few have found jobs in other parts of the company but not many. What is worse is some of those employees are applying for their same job in other non surplussed divisions only to get form reply from HR “We are sorry you’re not qualified for this position” People with 10,15,20 years service, degrees and so much knowledge, just cast aside.
For the remaining group of remaining employees the ability to promote or even move to new positions is nearly impossible. Surplussed employees have priority, as they should, but since this is constant with every new merger over the past decades the once wonderful culture of ATT has become difficult at best. It’s truly very sad to see because I have been able to create a beautiful life, been given amazing opportunities and experience, made dear friends, have learned so so much, grown and stretched beyond my comfort zone in many ways. For all those things I am ever grateful to our company. It’s sad to see the companies investment in its employees squandered and our investment in the company completely discarded.

"The story talked about us moving some management billing functions to Accenture. The facts are...."

The facts are that 'management billing functions' were never mentioned by anyone in the Carlson story. There were only generic references to outsourcing to Accenture, IBM, and Amdocs.

" stopped all training "

I don't know about the rest of you, but my group hasn't seen training of any kind on any of the equipment we maintain ( including any new equipment ) since we were SBC under Whittacre.

"I can't wait for the next round of lecturing us on the importance of ethical behavior."

I guess we all know that ethical behavior is for the "little people". Once you enter the ethereal realm of "leadership" you need not concern yourself with such trivialities as truth or ethics.

Don't you just love working for a company with senior management that thinks their employees are collectively stupid enough to believe this propaganda?

What's funny about this is now they've basically shared this story with everyone in the company & it's likely most people wouldn't have heard about this if they hadn't.

And everyone knows they're lying in the response.

What a cluster. Just your daily reminder this company is run by out if touch id–ts

Well if you are so upset, then put your big boy pants on and go toe to toe with Tucker on air. PROVE these so called facts you are spewing.

McElfresh is full of sh– or badly misinformed. Yes it is true no US billing employee was re-badged to Accenture BUT there were employees in ATO re-badged to Accenture as well as non-US billing employees. When they temporarily halted billing training Accenture India people they tried to head off criticism by 1. Offering all surplus employees jobs in Birmingham so they could say they left because they turned down a job 2. They forbid surplus employees communicating with Accenture India and had surplus employees train ATT retained employees who in turn train Accenture India employees so they could say we didn't have surplus employees directly train their replacements. The interviewed person was NOT a US billing employee and McElfresh is wrong!! Billing management under Weaky are incompetent liars too!@ Good for Tucker for bringing out the TRUTH!! LOVED THE SEGMENT!!!

The fact that McFresh was directed (and make no mistake, he was directed) to send that out tonight speaks volumes. It clearly hit a nerve with the C Suite.

There were at least a few hundred employees who were moved to Accenture.

Here is something to think about.

I had to train DTV employees after the DTV merger and then they took our places.
They are all younger and cheaper.
We managed International customer contact venders.

I have former coworkers that are impacted by the Accenture move. Tucker's report was spot on in terms of what they have told me is going on. To quote the report, anyone that doesn't have to be "watered every two days" knows this response is complete BS.

You're not alone AT&T employees. UnitedHealth Group is in the process of eliminating up to 80% of their US employees and transition those jobs to Ireland, India, and the Philippines. What is wrong with these American companies not taking care of their American employees. Personally I feel that a hefty tax should be levied on every dollar paid to overseas workers.

Tucker has been on a roll as an investigative journalist. He is after anybody who harms Americans. He will rip republican slimy crony capitalists as well as lunatic socialists. However, Tucker’s producers did an absolute terrible job blacking out the whistleblower. Her silhouette is very clear with her hairstyle. I hope she was wearing a wig!

Some of you people have severe trump derangement syndrome. Tell me how Birmingham works out for you.

I can’t believe this email is real! They knew something was coming because they stopped all training and offered positions in a place that has a 219% higher crime rate than anywhere else in America! And also stopping us from training the Indians even tho the training or should I say knowledge transfer is more than halfway done anyway I really don’t know how some of these jackasses get these positions!

“inaccurate and grossly misleading” is pretty good description for his response. Extremely vague and no specifics on employees who rebadged to IBM/TechM. Gave selected details on the Accenture deal that gives himself credit. See previous post on how the sh– the fan on the Accenture deal on this forum.

He is right about one thing, we are damn upset, not at Fox, but at these incompetent clowns and the board who rubber stamp their pay and positions.

I swear that people heard me laughing a mile away when I opened his email. Shoveling so much manure.

If McSelfish wants to set the record straight, put a company spokesperson on Tucker on with Sara Blackwell. They won’t get away with this spin for a second.

The good news is that his pitiful attempt at spin proves that Tucker’s segment must have put in a dent. Otherwise they would have ignored it. The only obstacle to them enacting this destructive agenda is bad PR. Keep up the heat!

I did wonder whether Trump aficionado Tucker had a bit of an editorial slant because AT&T owns CNN. I think the story is probably between AT&T's version and Tucker's version.

The email is nothing but lies. They rebadged thousands of employees to Accenture and a variety of other companies. I don’t even know how they thought they could cover this up.
