Work from home, eh? But what about "collaboration"?
This company could have been on the vanguard of remote work (indeed, arguably legacy T was just that before 2008).
Now it's relocate, renovate, and reserve (if you can find a space). Still have meetings where you sit on the phone and face a computer screen. (And pay $1000/mo in real estate cost).
They don’t need a virus to lay off people. Att is a virus.
I live and work in COR in Florida. Been coughing my brains out for two weeks. Not a peep.
If I'm a retail employee who gets corona virus, I'm filing for workmen comp. I may even be emotionally affected for years due to the threat of losing my job.
Has anyone been told by their management or a received a formal communication by location to stay at home?
The contractors in the retail stores will likely wind up doing a lot of scrubbing work, and anybody with a cough will be sent home, to exhaust any sick leave they have.
As for the rest of us, we'll be stuck in the usual useless meetings with coughers who insist it's something mundane, and have the power to force us to stay in the meeting anyway.
We're being told BAU, no telecommute except with multiple levels of sign-off from big bosses.

Considering we are launching our "make or break" product straight into the face of a probable pandemic with resultant global economic recession and contraction of consumer spending for items other than toilet paper and hand sanitizers - I will go on the record as saying we are screwed in the short term.
Having said that, once the survivors regain their feet they may very well flock to HBO to watch reruns of Friends just to regain a sense of hopeful normalcy in their mediocre little lives.
Unless the corona zombies don't eat them first.
Layoffs due to much more destructive and dangerous stank disease NOT corona virus.

If there are layoffs, it's because that part of business needs cost savings.
That's exactly what will happen, @tsu. Then, just like with the tax cut, no new American workers will be hired but instead laid off and replaced with cheap sweatshop workers in Slovakia and India.

It will take a few months. First they'll go to the government for 10-20 billion dollars of tax payer money saying they need it keep communication going in the name of national security. They'll convince the gooberment the money is needed to hire about 5000 people.
Once they get the money, THEN, they will use the virus as an excuse for the economic downturn and the need to layoff more employees (if they use the same playbook as before, the layoffs would happen within 2-3 days after they get the tax payers money)
