Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

MANAGED OUT OF THE BUSINESS

Looks like we have moved on from collaboration zones and with the new year comes a new buzzword(s) and for 2020,,,,,,,,,drum rolllllllllllllllllll,,,,,,, “ MANAGED OUT OF THE BUSINESS “ so as we look forward to yet another dismal year at the Entercommunitainment Giant AT&T we will hear these words spewed from the “ upper ranks of management “ all year while they target the upper 20% of senior employees with targeted work and the bottom 20% in whatever means necessary to “MANAGE THEM OUT OF THE BUSINESS” as I see it it would appear as though they are again trying to work the most senior employees out which in the end amounts to age discrimination as they have played this card before. And the bottom 20% they will use the progressive discipline system they have installed to fire anyone they seem fit. But to anyone out there just because you are not affected now does not mean you won’t be see at some point in time no matter what you will find yourself in one of those brackets and find yourself as the targeted individual. Wow, I just love this company.

anybody or company that manages employees out of fear of losing their jobs will be in deep trouble in the long run and will not survive not matter how high their stock price gets. unless they think constant turnover is best for the company. I don't care how good you are unless you "manage" your manager you will eventually be in the lower 20%.

Take a look at youtube videos of ex-employees in some of the top IT companies such as Netflix and google. They drop a certain % in the lowest bracket on a yearly basis. That's why you see so many employees claiming that they only spent one year even if they were making a 6 digit salary on their first year.

apparently you're pretty high up the food chain. I've never heard the term "managed out of the business" used in any meeting, TH, skip level, or quarterly meeting. hmmmmm

! left AT&T during 2013 for a new job. At this employer they at least make it clear right from the start of your employment that every year the let go the bottom rated 10% or employees end of discussion….. Sounds like GE - Rank & Yank

I left AT&T during 2013 for a new job. At this employer they at least make it clear right from the start of your employment that every year the let go the bottom rated 10% or employees end of discussion. That is just their culture. But at least they notify you right from the start, are honest, and don't play HR games. Evaluations are very fair and help to advise you on areas where you exceed and can approve (nothing like the joke that annual AT&T meetings were with you boss). My impression is that this employer is a great place to work, you are not micromanaged, great pay and benefits, but they do not tolerate dead wood. Do your job, keep yourself current and you have no problems here.

@1uou+13KeGffW - So true after they get rid of the first bottom 20% then they will the new next bottom 20% and so on and so on. people do not get what they are doing. this isn't how you run a company it is how you run a cesspool.

You've worked her with not much in return, except nice salary, good health benefits, good 401k, good pension.

280,000 to 100,000 employees was the 2020 plan all along. i think we are at ~220,00 now....probably less with IBM and other "outsources".

it is horrible place to work, especially if you are in the 35-60 age range. you wasted a lot of time here for not much in return. now you are seeing there isnt much left here and trying to start over somewhere, it just stinks

@jzh+13KeGffW - after they've gotten rid of the first "bottom 20%', what makes you think they will stop? The next year, they will get rid of another 20%, which will be people who were doing just fine at their jobs the previous year.

No matter where you are if you have a pension they will target you. They start by taking your work away and giving to new hires which you have to train. Then the will basically forget about you and have you go to meeting where the people hosting the meeting asking why you are there and the only answer you have is that you were told by your manager to go. Then you when you go to hr they will do nothing but go over your managers head and keep going over every other managers head until you get the answer you are looking for or I am guessing they will get mad and tell you to leave because I never followed hr’s advice. Then your manager will call you in off hours just because she can and is your manager all the while nothing is getting done. You complain to hr about harassment to hr and file a report on her but nothing gets done and they side with your manager. Nothing but a cesspool hr and management.

Does anyone really want to carry the bottom 20%? They need to step up.
