Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T and Corona Virus

What do you expect to happen here? What's the impact? The market is panicking, but I am more curious about how this impacts AT&T and it's workers.

If we go into 'self isolation' like they did in China, all hourly people will be screwed as they will not get wages.

I really do not know how this will ned.

our customers that are impacted by the virus should self quarantine and stay home to stream Friends on 1 of our 200 overpriced streaming services.

PS if you die of the virus we will need proof before canceling any of our great services.

call center will still be open and workers will get fired if they can't get FMLA because their will be no time available and who wants to use all their vacation for sick leave? Oh I bet ATT is hoping for this. Get more of the Mexico call centers to take out jobs

Most masks won't protect you. They don't seal well enough.
Get some lysol spray. And if you cough cover your mouth.

All managers are required to report to Wuhan for coronavirus training or face termination. BYOM bring your own mask.

There has been no planning for a Coronavirus epidemic by leadership. No protective equipment is in stock or has even been ordered for customer facing employees or those forced to work in an overcrowded collaboration zone.

This company does not plan for the future and does not care one bit for its lower level employee's welfare. We're on our own on this - stock up on masks, gloves, possibly glasses and body suit, and sanitizer.

If we get seriously sick, dealing with the FMLA BS is on us. If we get sick and die, that's that many fewer employees for the sociopaths at the top to surplus.

the employees working in the stores do not have any sick time. Each time one of us ( and we have ) gets type A or B flu ; we continue to go to work and spread the virus just as the company wants. We have tried to file FMLA each time, but we get denied. We ask for support from our management and they tell us to take the points, get fired and find a new job - or continue to work and infect fellow employees and customers. And this is what we all do, every year. The company does not care about people, we are all just a number. There is no " planning " for a virus outbreak because the company has not and will not care. Or at least for the last 10 years that is.

I participated in a pandemic contingency plan exercise a few years ago. It's been part of contingency planning for a while.

A pandemic itself, or government mandated quarantines will not result in layoffs or loss of pay.

Ignore the trolls...

AT&T has likely taken out more "pheasant insurance" policies. If you are not familiar with the term look it up.

Corporate email says to stay home if sick to prevent getting others sick. As craft in the west we get 7 days paid sick days. Then there’s FMLA and short term disability. I’m sure a Corona Virus diagnosis from a doctor will get a paid disability approval from Segwick.

So in short, craft personnel are going to fine money-wise.

They have contractors at the ready when the employee count drops low enough due to deaths. Don’t worry someone will take care of your customers.

I work for someone and a department who could care less about this and my manager has his team going into the office and travelling all over for noncritical meetings training and events,, not sure how to handle but companies like Nestle are putting a moratorium on traveling immediately until more is known about the virus and how its spreading. I guess when the entire office is with fever and pneumonia they’ll probably take some action on such things......

If in the course of your workday you contract the corona virus, remember that you are expected to be at work and on time! Unexcused absences are strictly forbidden!

If you take sick time, you are required to schedule an appointment with your doctor and have them fill out the lengthy and overly complex FMLA form. Make sure to submit your FMLA form to the appropriate department within the 48 hour time window or expect to be subject to the appropriate disciplinary action.

Team, you matter.

  1. S. Face masks will be provided when the budget allows.

Craft will be given generous time off with pay and many new face masks. Managers will be sent to Wuhan and locked in high rise with used face mask. So sorry manager.

Good luck to all the installers that have to work in people's homes every day.

We can't even order new tools or boot covers for our muddy boots, so don't expect AT&T to provide masks or gloves in a timely manner to employees that interact with the public every day. And don't even think of calling off when every third person is sneezing and coughing coronavirus all over the room! That would be considered job abandonment, your health is less important than meeting sales metrics.

Remember, if you are at the bottom of Randall's totem pole you DON'T matter! You are expendable to this company.

T is very good at contingency planning. ATT can use hosted virtual desktop which can be quickly deployed to employees. Its a secure option for remote working so long as the employee has a computer or mobile device. This would apply to all office workers. I am sure that field workers could do anything that goes up to the terminal. I am not so sure folks would want to enter peoples houses or businesses during a pandemic. I think the company has 'it' accounted for. Im personally not really worried. That said we dont currently have a pandemic.

Flu A/B k–ls 1 of 1000 people (0.1%), Coronavirus k–ls 1 of 50 (2%); so 20 times more deadly. "IF" it spreads to the level of people that get the flu each year (Flu k–ls 646,000 worldwide) it will k–l ~13 Million people worldwide. The Spanish Flu of 1918 had a 2.5% death rate, 1/3 of world population got it and it k–led 20+ Million people (some estimates as high as 50 Million). So the question is at this rate of transmission what % of the 7.7 Billion people in the world will get it. (Also don't forget your comparing it to Flu A/B which has been around for a long time, this has only been around 2 months and is still spreading)

My Employer is for the duration we are not working has stated that we will not be paid anything at all, since we are technically not working. Does that then mean i can decide to quit on the basis that upon returning to work, I will have already lost the entirety of February's wages which now puts me under Financial strain as rent still needs to be paid etc.

Maybe they'll stop ending work from home. Other aspects, there are no supply chains from China that directly affect AT&T, although, a slowdown of Apple handsets could slow cellular. Since cell phone is someone's only phone in most cases, that should be consider a consumer basic. Other areas, like premium television is a consumer discretionary, but absent to this virus leading to layoffs in the broad economy, I'm not seeing much there either.

The market is pricing in a Fed rate cut, so, that makes AT&T's dividend that much more attractive. Compared to stocks that pay no dividends, AT&T's dividend should be a bit of a shock absorber to a price collapse in its stock.

The shock we have had so far from the virus is enough to start a recession. Poor global economy.
Valuations are way too high right now and this gives us a good chance of a recession and a bear market.

That will turn into layoffs...
