Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T What do you do when you dont know when your career is Dying

Be prepared to leave your self-dignity and pride at the door. You're just part of the head count they project the need to do the daily work. If you're not one of the few golden children, then you're invisible or targeted for firing. To say this place has low morale would be a complete understatement. While you never take your work home with you, the stress will bleed into your personal life and affect you adversely. Most employees are taking anti-depressants of some sort.

You own your career, AT&T doesn't. Take advantage of AT&T educational opportunities (free) to set yourself up for your plan B. I would recommend getting some nano degrees in data, machine learning, programing or other technology paths. You own your plan. YOU need to make your plan NOW. Don't wait. You should assume that you will be let go in a layoff this year. If you don't, wonderful. If you do, you own that plan.

career is what you make of it, but you need to be realistic here at T, because like any big legacy Corp. lots of change outside your control is coming, regardless of how hard you work etc. In large corps until you reach a certain strata of management your disposable. To make things worse at T , there's a lot of redundancies and folks s—ing on the test of a virtual monopoly waiting till retirement don't get mad just accept the fact and work inside the system.

It’s your career...take control of it. No one is going to take care of it for you. Don’t paint yourself into a corner...branch out...work on your education and/or change your career choice. Too many just settle and then complain without trying to do anything about their situation.

Hi, my name is: "One of the too many mouths to feed". (I know it's a mouthful, eh?) Please surplus me. I'm over 50 yo, 20+ yrs with the co, and already hit MR75, and so therefore I deserve JS to swing the axe on my neck. Presto, one less mouth to feed. Thanks JS, you're super awesome with your buzzword laden sentences, and CNN loves you.

Being a low man in seniority and watching the robbery that’s happening between the Old IR techs doing the most to do the least amount of work makes me want to throw up in my mouth. All first lines seem to be best friends with who they manage so accountability is horrible at best. Most union reps are old and only see 1 or 2 years down the road. Most 20+ year workers have clearly checked out and are only waiting for a “good package”. IR side is clearly being lead by the old guys only looking toward retirement. I’ve never seen so many people get rewarded for not knowing there job. When I meet a new face I almost want to ask “what don’t you do?” first... so I don’t waste my time asking them for help. It’s a sh– show and its tolerated because they built it. I’m riding this ship until it sinks because it does pay great, but clearly the old techs don’t want to learn sh–, they think they don’t have to adapt and change... But again most just want a good package and there gone...sh– show... So to answer the question of becoming a first line, I would and I am trying because thru management maybe I can help get rid of the dead weight in this company. AT&T is a machine that won’t stop because you do. Change is coming...

eveydady feels depressing and unhappy people, the undead, zombi like, I know this is a touchy-feely one, but do trust your gut on this. It can signal a bad company culture. Your brain notices and connects more than just logical facts and numbers, and a sense of unease and dread may be your early warning sign that something is off. Pay attention to the tone of the posted signs, the expressions on people's faces, and snippets of interactions you overhear. Imagine yourself working in the office every day, and pay attention to how it makes you feel.
