Dish CEO Charlie Ergen Says Merger With DirecTV Feels ‘Inevitable’

Reports that the Dish Network will merge with DirecTV first surfaced in last September, however, AT&T denied those claims stating, “DirecTV is an important part of what we’re going to be doing going forward.”

Now, it seems the merger is bound to happen as Dish CEO Charlie Ergen said the deal feels “inevitable” during Dish Network’s Q4 2019 earnings call today.

Back in October, Fox Business reported that private equity firm Apollo Global Management, along with another banker, were looking into a deal with AT&T that would allow the company “to offload some of the risk” of DirecTV and maintain its satellite business. The deal also would merge DirecTV and Dish into one company managed by AT&T. The investment firm would provide financing for the transaction and hold a minority equity stake along with Dish, but AT&T would still maintain control of DirecTV and its more than 20 million customers

Though the deal would get AT&T about half of the $49 billion it paid for DirecTV in 2015, the benefits of having it in place outweigh the losses, Fox Business reported. It is structured in a way that relieves AT&T of its $20 billion DirecTV debt.

It’s been a rough path since AT&T acquired DirecTV — as the pay-TV service has seen massive losses. The service peaked in 2016 with 21 million subscribers, but with continuing losses that saw the company lose a whopping 945,000 traditional pay-TV subscribers between the DirecTV satellite TV and U-Verse services in the fourth quarter.

sat tv is done. cord cutting and streaming -as usual randy and john didnt envision this trend, they did the OPPOSITE

Truth very happy with my cable tv along with cheap streaming. Always works whether it is storming or not. Know someone who signed up for directv last fall and still hasn’t got the 200 dollar gift card he was promised in the deal.

Att always adding some garbage just give me the lowest possible price and the best service possible. Stop with all the automated voice c-ap when I call. My voip from cable is light years ahead of what att had to offer. It is simple and always works and their billing site is simple and straight forward. Att web sites just s—s.

Directv will sell for $1 plus the mountain of debt that has accumulated due to bad decisions by Stank.

At this point it's a pretty worthless property with traditional satellite customers fleeing to OTT and DirectvNow customers going to OTT also.

satellite- rain fade, pricey and buggy hardware, long term locked contracts impossible to get out of

dtv now- barely functioning DVR, expensive as hell, poor channel selection

It will only happen if the CEOs can agree on their take out of the deal. That is all that matters especially when it comes to att.

It may be a fight, but att has learned to lie very well to get what they want.
They have blatantly lied to the federal government numerous times in recent years to get what they want and they have learned there is never any accountability or repercussions.

Instead of the word "lie", use the word "pay". That's what really happens.

Mergers don't happen anymore. Someone will buy someone else. One will be survivor controller of the combined business. AT&T would have to put some value on Directv business, and then use that to buy Dish, or Dish could just outright buy Directv. Now all of this is pretty doubtful it could happen in today's anti-trust make up. There would be another big fight with the justice department to make it work.

Inevitable indeed. Ratty overspent on a flawed strategy, ruined DTV (like every other company T bought), chased off the talent, and will sell it for pennies on the $.
