Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Oh Captain, My Captain!

Surplus related, one engineer in our group is jumping ship with only a half-dozen years of service, taking severance/MVO and going to work for a competitor. Shocker.

On a funnier note, with decades of experience doing the same job, I used to telecommute FT and now am relegated to driving to a collaboration zone. So I lose a few hundred dollars a month in gas and car maintenance, that can’t be made up with a raise because the company is poor and has a bucket the size of a thimble when it comes to management raises, whatever.... I send my wife a picture daily of myself sitting alone in a sea of 20 drop in spaces with no one else using them. I’ve lost all confidence in AT&T Leadership. To all the craft ever considering management, do not be fooled, don’t do it. The initial bump you get with a promotion is eaten up by .25%-1% raises annually. This is consistent with everyone I know who’s not on a LDP. If I knew then what I know now ...

As a former employee of over 39 year that started with Western Electric, I can attest the companies respect for employees is a downhill slide.
I determined I would be better off staying in a craft role which afforded me employment protection and a pension..
This was after a fellow in our group pursued a job in management which he got, only to be laid off 6months later with no recourse.
That was back in 1990. Its only gotten worse since then.
My sympathies to all who are currently employed by ATT below the executive level. They took the best job ever and k–led it.

I might be that 5yr guy leaving. I have a cube right outside a collab area. Same 1 or 2 folks sitting in a sea of desks every day, on conf calls that they could do from anywhere.

Yeah most of us in craft know better than to go into management. We see how the company treats you guys. Worse than they treat us.
