Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Happy New Year & Spring Cleaning Layoffs

I’ve been hearing a 10% to 15% reduction in my organization (ATO). I’m already on my 3rd L-1 and 2nd L-2, L-4, L-5 different managers for my I/M group this year. Each one is more clueless and only manage from the top down “Dashboard” big data style. Employees & customers aren’t factored into these numbers. The days of boots up succession and caring about your customers/employees issues and concerns are over.

There is now 9 layers of managers between the CEO and our group, it used to be 7 layers. I’m thinking the sycophants are being protected from other orgs that are laying off.

How about your organization? Any news ?

Thanks Randall,

I was already leaving this toxic top down micro-managed company. No more autonomy or innovation unless you’re in the sycophant or nepotistic circle. Tired of not being valued as a contributor/asset and seen only as a liability. This was borne out in the last couple of employee surveys that I’m not alone in this feeling & thought. I can be great on 99 out of 100 measured items but it’s the 1 that is focused on, even if it’s missed by .1%. It’s become an untenable situation.

I used to love working here and enjoyed the old family friendly environment. Everyone’s ideas and contributions used to be valued. I will miss my co-workers because we are like family but my health & own family quality time made this an easy decision. My healthcare team advised that I need to leave this toxic environment. Work/life balance is totally askew, it’s become difficult to even get a day off that’s not scheduled.

Good luck & God Bless those that don’t have the same option I have at this time.

“ Hopefully the reduction will rid us of the incompetent, number hustling and toxic people”

Nope, has only made it worse. They think being perfect will save them. 😂 They’re running scared. Don’t want to lose they’re cushy perky gig.

Scrooge’s, Grinches, umm I meant Execs have it tough this time of year too with their added tasks.

  1. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years company parties
  2. Counting their hoard from layoffs, offshoring, rebadging, bonuses & raises
  3. Outside employees used to get a Thanksgiving & Christmas lunch, then it became a combined lunch. Now they only have the privilege of working on the Holidays without any company get together.
  4. Pretending to care at the Town hall propaganda speeches.

Where are the ghosts of Past, Present and Future?

Isn't it amazing how layers of management keep proliferating like leeches. They add no value but get huge salaries. Get rid of the parasites instead of laying off people who actually do the work. Nah, never gonna happen. The parasites never let go until the host is dead.

@ op & dsb,

You are both correct, I’ve been hearing the same accounts from many technicians I support. I don’t know which level has created this unacceptable toxic environment but the technicians are at their breaking point.

I’m told they have extra tasks that are continually added to their job. They are expected to still finish their dispatches in the same amount or less time. They are between a rock & a hard place, the customer & technician can’t win.

Here are some of the added challenges they’ve told me about;

  1. Turfs are gone so there is a lot of added travel time which isn’t subtracted from total dispatch time
  2. Constantly inundated with emails they have to read
  3. WiFi surveying the customers homes
  4. True Testing each pair at the customer
  5. Inventory & ordering their own supplies
  6. Calling & consulting with their manager every couple of hours
  7. Testing to find or repair old non-maintained cable/pairs
  8. Assist downloading apps
  9. Handing out the service promise with their name and their managers name which, they have to write in themselves
  10. Constantly getting text msgs which they have to read a respond to some or all.

I’m sure a technician could expound on this small list, but you can see their point. Management can’t keep adding tasks and expect better results for they will surely be disappointed as our customers.

Creating more levels of management. That will solve everything. What could go wrong.

I agree with the OP,

We (technicians) are working in a chaotic & toxic environment. Any slight, supposedly infraction of the constantly moving target & rules results in being berated, disciplined, including some fired.

After 21 years, I don’t know how to do my job anymore if I listen to my non-experienced management team. I love the rule of having to call less experienced manager every couple of hours to explain why it’s taking so long on my dispatch and him telling me how to speed it up. A waste of time, they are only interested in making the holy grail for whatever the flavor of the week number needs to be met on the Dashboard. The customer, providing the best service and doing the right thing isn’t discussed.

The main reason is because of the Lion scenario. I don’t have to be the fastest, just faster than you.
