Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

DO NOT TRAIN YOUR REPLACEMENT!

If AT&T has given you the boot, but they expect you to train your replacement before you go, just say no! Take all your knowledge with you as you leave this place. Don't help Randall as he screws you and your fellow workers over, let him and this ship sink!

AT&T is transferring employees to contractors.
It is the new contract companies that are requiring the ex-AT&T employees to train their replacements.
There is nothing that requires you to train anyone as a new employee.

"We don’t get our severance letter or offer until after we have trained our replacements so if we don’t do what we are told most likely no severance"

Well, don't openly refuse, just teach them to be a very, very substandard you. Leave important stuff out, and fill their heads with mind numbing details about unimportant trivia. There are many ways to fail at this task without openly refusing. Be creative! Take pleasure in every single parting sabotage you do. Remember your job is to make this not pay for the company. If everyone did this it would not be so easy for "leadership" to let people go on a whim. Make 'em pay.

Looks like they made a mistake of claiming there's no severance, but otherwise, this December 29th article seems to have gotten it right, and points to a lawyer who is helping some to fight this.

It's not true that there have been no petitions against AT&T since 2011 as a poster below claimed.

I'm guessing that the ampersand in "AT&T" may be confusing searches, but a search for "A" then dump to Excel, then sort by name to extract those beginning with "AT&T" yields 92 hits since 2003, with 13 of those hits in 2019. Of those 13, 6 petitions were "Denied," 4 were marked "Termination - investigation was terminated prior to a decision," and 3 were marked "Certified."

These 3 were Certified in 2019:

AT&T Business-Global Operations & Services Grand Rapids, MI State/One-Stop 7/30/2019
AT&T Digital Retail and Care Houston, TX State/One-Stop 8/15/2019
AT&T Business-Global Operations & Services Brecksville, OH State/One-Stop 9/20/2019

Definitely looks possible, especially since Accenture is an Irish company.

LOL sounds like ..There is no way you can replicate the success you had on project A because project B has preconditions C D E F. To apply the same methods used on A would be like pushing on a string to expect the same approach to be successful on project B.... therefor you need to implement new approaches X Y and Z . Let the Contractors figure it out that is what they are paid $10/day for.....

If you openly refuse to train, they will retaliate.

If you train incorrectly, or incompletely, or inaccurately, who's to say?

Just another day in paradise. I had to train my Indian replacements from May to Sep 2015, now it is someone else's turn.
There are things that never change, among them AT&T shines

Has anybody at AT&T been told to train a replacement if they are given the boot? That sounds like IBM stuff. AT&T kicks you to a contractor, and then the contractor tells you to train a replacement. The carrot usually is, you lose severance if you don't. But, that winds up being the contractor's deal.

No one from AT&T has filed a petition since 2011 - WOW, I'm surprised.

Copy this website or bookmark it cause I know this post will be removed soon. Pass it to your colleagues cause we live in free country and everyone should benefit from government programs.

About the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program
The Trade Act of 1974 (19 USC § 2271 et seq.), as amended, established Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) to provide
assistance to workers in firms hurt by foreign trade. Program benefits include long-term training while receiving income support.
TAA provides both rapid and early assistance. Filing this petition is the first step in qualifying for TAA benefits and assistance. After
the petition is filed, the U.S. Department of Labor will determine whether a significant number or proportion of the workers of the
firm have become total or partially separated or are threatened to become totally or partially separated, and whether imports or a
shift in production or services to a foreign country contributed importantly to these actual or threatened separations and to a decline
in sales or in production of articles or supply of services. If a petition is approved and the workers are certified as eligible to
participate in the TAA program, workers covered by a certification may contact their state workforce agency to apply for benefits.
These benefits are provided at no expense to employers.

Anyone who's job is being outsourced and you have to train that person, please keep all proof/documents/meeting notices etc. You can file for "Petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA)" and get extra months of unemployment and training benefits. Search for you company name https://www.doleta.gov/tradeact/petitioners/taa_search_form.cfm and see if someone has already filed a Petition at your location. If the petition goes through and the judge rules in your favour then your entire location will get extra months of unemployment. Please take some time to look into this. People from my telecom company won the judgement and everyone in wireless got almost an extra year of unemployment benefits and training courses.

yep att has shown they could care less about their workers and so I you should care less about att. they laid down the rules when they suggest you train your replacement. if they want you to train your replacement tell them you would if you are guaranteed a job till retirement and you get a raise.

If AT&T Surpluses you then closely read your surplus letter and other documents they provide to you. I did so and there was NOTHING stating that I must train my replacement. Avoid, Deflect & Delay giving training to others. Even if the others are people you have worked with as employees for year (sad) If your manager puts you on the spot about providing training to others simply ask them to tell you where in your surplus paperwork does it state you MUST train others to perform the work you performed. If the manager can't show you where it states this in the paperwork then don't do it.

Remember the brilliance about this surplussing is that NO ONE IS TO BLAME. No person you will meet or talk to will be the one who made the decision to surplus you. So everyone you talk to or meet who remains behind will be Sooooo Nice to you and say how sad it is to loose you. This is a Psych Game AT&T plays so you will willingly give up your work secrets and quietly sulk your way out the door. I say take what you learned with you and let those who remain figure it out and if that hurts AT&T's bottom line well that is too bad.

My achievements on my final day at AT&T.

  1. Cancelled software licenses for 50 contractors.
  2. Handed my manger a cordless Plantronics headset from piece parts around the office. I kept the real one they gave me that works great.
  3. Sprayed a water bottle of Coyote Urine, Oysters in Oil and other smelling stuff in all hall ways, elevators, elevator shafts and stair wells throughout the building. Everyone at that work location was complaining about the smell (note: It was harmless but effective) Don't be surprised if you are surplussed if they stop you at the front door to collect your items and not let you into the building on your last day.

Sorry to all if I seem to be an A$$ but I was a dedicated employee for multiple decades, My manager assured me we had plenty of work and were were not at risk of loosing our jobs. THE MANAGER WAS WRONG. Loosing my job at AT&T to me felt like having my spouse out of the blue say "I want a divorce" with no details as to why. I gave my youth to AT&T and they paid me well. I had good annual reviews. Not a single sick day in 16yrs. Lots of unpaid OT and weekend work. If they had asked me to take a downgrade in rank or pay I would have taken it. Was I consulted in any way: NO I put in for over 130 jobs on AT&T Career Path with my Outplacement Services upgrade resume and got nothing. My AVP called me on the 2nd to last day to ask if I had any leads and I told the AVP AT&T Career path was a joke. AVP said they would check a few things for me but NOTHING. The final day I got a heart felt sorry from my manager and out the door

Don't PITY me.
Don't think of me as an A$$ for what I did on my last day.
I don't need you to think about me.
Instead think about you. Look out for you. Do what you can to stay or what you can to leave on your terms.
If you are forced out then don't cater to AT&T.
Each of you employees at AT&T are wonderful hard working people and you deserve more ethical consideration than what upper management is providing (all about the mighty dollar)
