Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What is AT&T going to look like in 5 years ?

Their internet business will get eaten up by Satellites in the sky (Amazon // SpaceX) - mark my words - their satellite based low latency gig symmetrical speeds will be better internet than what most AT&T can offer in the United States - average ping 20 gig up and down and no install required? Just plug the antenna into the wall and point it up ?

Their (once famous HBO) will be given away free because no one wants it and everyone will be watching Netflix / AppleTV /

XANDER - their advertising and analytics division gathers AT&T subscribers watching habits and online activities and sells them to other companies. How can they do that when no one is subscribing to AT&T anymore ?

DirectTV - will be no more

5G ? So their gonna spend tons of money for new infrastructure for 5G towers and micro cell units everywhere to power what exactly ?

Lets take a second here ... 5G will be for the benefits of what exactly : cell phones and maybe their (wireless) set-top-boxes for their AT&TV platform ?

Most probably don't remember but AT&T said perty much the same thing about 4G LTE they are touting now when speaking of 5G. Using all the big keywords here: Revolutionize - Game Changer.

How's that AT&T 4G LTE these days ? Did it really revolutionize or change the game ?
AT&T wireless subscribers is reaching the near plateau in new customer store walk-ins so much they now have (in-home-experts) cell phone sales going to installs and repairs !

Those guys/gals say they are doubling the sales of traditional stores! Wow. But .. uh... what happens when no one wants our internet or tv and they have gotten tired of repair after repair and switch to another service ? They wont be able to sell any more cell phones that way ...

All in all the upper echelon keep touting all the accounting words stock analysts love to hear .. 7-10% yields for dividends .. blah blah .. 10% EBIDTA .. blah blah

My dudes its simple business here ... they are only able to tout such numbers (temporarily) now because they are able to deliver their products / services much cheaper than last year .. HOW ??

  1. They've laid off a big % of their work-force
  2. They've outsourced as much as they can (with more to come I am sure)
  3. They've RAISED prices on all their SERVICES
  4. Every piece of equipment used in their Internet / Television unit (Uverse and DTV) has been reconditioned and refurbished beyond their lifetime limit

Whats funny is their statement : We don't care about losing customers we're focusing on the long-term value customers.

WTF does that say? Sounds like - we're going to keep bleeding and raising prices on the customers we have ... and we're gonna lay off more so its continuing to be cheaper to peddle our products and services ...

In business you make money by getting more customers who want your products and services.

Not raising prices on the customers you have to keep padding your accounting books ...

This place .. smh

Enjoy the last part of your ride. It's coming to an end. Amazon has created a telecom business.

Summary: T loses market share. Result is a company that doesn't grow. They'll become the equivalent of a company selling buggy whips and no demand. Bye-Bye.

Direct TV has already been ruined and abandoned. UVerse has not been supported in years, but they haven't been able to shut it down because many customers still like it. The outside plant is rotting and being patched together piecemeal to keep customers in service for the time being.

As the pipeline that built this company collapses, Randy and Stanky could care less. They're big Hollywood stars now! Unfortunately, their media empire that Randy has blown the bank on is also collapsing as irreplaceable talent leaves this sinking ship.

Didn't realize the amount of satellites or proximity vs DirecTV. Interesting stuff.
If this knocks out at&t, it'll knock out Verizon and all of the carriers. Honestly doesn't matter how well anyone is run with the aforementioned speeds, little overhead the wireless carriers can't compete. Of course if it's all happens.

In 10 years it will be chopped up and sold off piece meal. DTV will be the 1st piece to go, TW will be absorbed by Apple TV, Wireless will go to competitors and infrastructure will be broken up!!

My 5 year predictions:

  • I will NOT be at T.
  • Ratty and Stinky will be enjoying their lucrative pensions and perks on some island somewhere.
  • The current members of the Board of Directors will go on to ruin some other companies.
  • T will be close to bankruptcy.
  • No one will want to buy any of the pieces of T. T overpays for every business they ever have acquired, then proceed to ruin them, drive out all the talent, then try to sell them off for pennies.

Cancelled my internet and still shows I have it when I log in but not being charged for it. Said I would have to delete my login and recreate one with mobile phones I have on the account. Lol yeah that work without any problems. Going to be moving the mobile phones to a new provider this year anywhere s I will let att count my internet as still a customer just as long the charge me lol. Cannot wait till I do not do business with att.

Not sure what T will look like in 5 years, but I would wager that I most likely won;t be part of it.

Typical TV Satellites lie in an orbit about 23,000 miles above the earths atmosphere. SpaceX satellites will start at 340 miles up.

Internet data streams alot different than TV streams. Internet streams you can lose alot of bits and bytes and never know the difference. With tv you would know because you see pixelation.

No line of sight issue for DTV also issue due to only 5 satellites utilized for entire DTV channel lineup .. SpaceX will have 46,000 covering the earth. Line of sight problems for SpaceX might be < 2% of their customer base.

Your comparing extreme examples to try to say that model of delivery wont work? C'mon.

Satellites "might" work for clear skies. Not sure when driving through areas that don't have a clear shot to satelite (trees, mountains, skyrises). There's a reason you can't use satellite phones or Directv/Dish without a clear site of line to satellite and that's not fixable as far as I know.

Reguardless we are the best of the competition and customers want our reliable services. Yes we are terrible but still more reliable then the lil completion out there. Layoffs are inevitable, technology dictates that we simply don't need. Outsourcing is running rampant amount every Company out there, not just telecommunications. Try not voting in Big Business Representatives to our Goverment. Refurbished equipment is a staple amount telecommunications. Until people vote in candidates who truly represent the middle class interest, we are screwed.

Anyone who thinks 5G is going to save the day needs to watch this video. It goes into detail about how the telcos have pilfered billions of $ over the years intended for fiber build outs etc.. Circuit court in D.C. hearing the suit on 1/20. Should be interesting to say the least
