Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Can we expect more rebadging any time soon?

I'm not sure which option is worse: being laid off or being rebadged and having the new company get rid of me a year later with no severance.

FYI, getting that check from the employment commission, that money you get to live on while you look for a job, severance or not, is also money that gets taxed, a rule of thumb is keep 25% of it aside to pay that tax on it.

Possible the contracts with all the outsourcing companies are complete. Consider how complex they are considering the built-in performance metrics T typically demands and the transition and licensing of technology tools, and other needs. And they need expense reduction asap to pay off the debt, maintain the dividend, and sustain the minimal capital investment. Seems a waste of effort to repeat cycles of this with the same vendor.

If your skill set can still get you a job then it’s better to get 6 month severance money and search for a job in next 2-3 months and claim unemployment meanwhile else getting outsourced is a better option.

Irlb..
From a financial perspective, you are taxed on your INCOME for any given year..separation money IS NOT taxed more because it is layoff money, it is taxed as income.ATT may withhold at the highest rate but you will get a refund if they overwithhold.

TechM and IBM needs experienced people to do the work that they need to do. I expect them to keep skilled employees with positive attitudes for a few years. Contractors will probably be reduced over time. As applications get retired and as investment capital gets cut, less people will be needed but it won't be in a year. Outsourcing s—s but it beats being laid off. I look at it as "a few years of severance" vs 6 months or less of severance that employees will get this year when layoffs occur.

From a financial perspective, seems like it would be better to be rebadged. You get another years pay instead of 6 months severance taxed at a very high rate. You have plenty of time to look for another job while still employed which makes you look better to employers.

I'm in the same spot, not knowing if I'm on any kid of chopping block, Jonesing for an MVO, praying for a Surplus, not looking forward to a Rebadge for the reasons already mentioned. I suspect that if you do end up at Amdocs, Accent, TechM, IBM, or hey maybe even MS, you'll be there a year + 1 day and out if you are currently a MR75 kind of guy, aka age discrimination. And it would be exactly like a brand new job with everyone in theory with same/no experience, as they are going to hit the core of the L1/L2's. IOW's, people who are not "management", as that would normally give you a leg up, say you got rebadged to IBM and were a L3/L4 here, you'd go in pretty high up, and I would think have a better shot at being retained beyond the pump and dump 1 year + 1 day.

The new company likely has multiple clients. They don't get rid of everybody. I know people outsourced to IBM who did well. But, assume that the new company will be selective in who they keep. They're not going to keep anyone with a bad attitude.

The devil is in the details. Does seniority carry forward to the vender? If not, it's like a brand new employer, and then they compete with any brand new employer.
