I am not surprised by the company sending an email to AT&T Managers (with little actual details) informing us that if we don't retire before 1/1/2021 we will only be entitled to government provided taxpayer funded Medicare and no longer have any medical benefits from the company after the age of 65 when we become Medicare eligible. I am surprised by the majority of the previous posts on this subject that appear to be from current AT&T employees that have not looked at the plan documents or called AON (the Benefits Manager) to confirm this recent change and how it changes their own finances in retirement. This change could be a 150K reduction in benefits if you and your spouse live into your 90's in my opinion.
A previous post on this issue had around 40 comments and one came up with a plan to make up the shortfall of $2700 a year and did not include the correct amount of $4200 per year for a married couple (Current benefit- Employee provided with $2700 & spouse an additional $1500 in an AON funded HRA) by working until the age of 65 and saving more. Both options may not be possible for many employees even if the math is corrected. Even more concerning were the "nothing new here" comment or "this should not impact your retirement decision as it is only $200 a month and we make that in a day". It is actually $350 a month to a married retiree that reaches the age of 65- again incorrect math. This uniformed and no big deal attitude in the comments section may encourage the company to cut further into our benefits- craft and management. I believe the company reads online posts across multiple outlets as I am related to a Social Media Manager at a large national healthcare company and her job is to do just that and pass the posted information up to Senior Management. If this substantial benefit change goes under the radar unnoticed more changes could easily follow.
I will be asking in written questions to every VP level Townhall in 2020 in my department "Why our Senior Leadership at AT&T thinks it is OK to take away medical benefits from our dedicated employees that have been promised to them for decades?".
I am hoping that you do the same if you agree with my post. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.
